A/T car (not shifter cable quesiton, but...)
the Throttle valve passing gear. (aka detent, TV, and pass cable)
my guess this is an ASM question, ?
what year, car. a 40 year span !
what trans. (lots of trans used, in many years)
on newer cars this cable is not present the TCM brain does this.
for sure the Honda FSM is one of the best in the world.
chapter 14 is and amazing piece of work.
at random page 14-1 is the index for 1992 to 1995 (i roll dice)
the index says, 14-128 Pg.
it states: set free play page 14-123
then states the throttle cable must be adjusted first. !
14-129 is the final step. ... so its not a 1 line answer,
you can read it here, at the link below. the full fsm older that year 2000......
not stating year, is bad.

If the van won't go into passing gear

Many vehicles have a mechanical transmission kick down linkage attached to the throttle body and it's adjustable, other vehicles use the computer to control passing gear. If you tell us what kind of vehicle this is we may be able to give more assistance.

Passing gear

no year,? a 1973 civic? id bet not.. but......
many of these cars, have 4speed, A/T some are M/T
passing gear is A/T so on many there is a P/S or N/S switch
on the console. that sets the shift points, normal or racing....
depending year, the older cars had a passing gear cable.
that can be sticking or broke or adjusted wrong.
no year, no joy, is my ploy, no joke.

"87' Dodge Ram" The passing gear that is attached to my carburetor, makes my accelerator extremely tense. If it was unhooked what would be my results from this?

What you call a passing gear is in fact a kick down cable and should only work when you push the accelerator to the floor. It increases engine rpm at the same time it shifts the gears back a gear to allow for acceleration. If you unhook it then there will be no shift of the gear so you will be struggling in the drive gear and it will be useless. . Fix and adjust the cable and you will find that it works really good.

1997 GMC 5.0 4x4 won't kick down to passing gear. RPMs rise but truck just lags and doesn't increase in speed

passing gear adjustment needs adjusting--unless qualified--take it to transmission garage. If electronic--the switch may be bad.

Will the passing gear cable being disconnected affect the inability to exceed 80 m.p.h.?

There is no "passing gear cable" thats the pressure regulator cable, and yes it needs to be connected and adjusted properly.
