COMPLETELY SAFE: put up on lift or raise off ground with stands with enough room to get under then have someone do the gear shifting going to speed that causes the thud ,let driver(person in car)tell you when brakes are applied so you're ready then see where noise comes from;could be transmission?????
open the hood you should see the throttle cables on the side of the throttle body twist that monster the cables are wrapped around thats your throttle if the motor doesnt rev up its a problem in the throttle body if it does then your throttle cable may be snapped somewhere
I HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM MY 2005 PT SUDDENLY JUST SEEMED TO CHOKE DOWN AND PUSHING ON GAS PEDAL MADE IT WORSE SO I LET UP ON PEDAL AND THEN SLOWLYMPH ACCELERATER BUT I WOULD ONLY GO ABOUT 50 MPH AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON I CHECKED OIL IT WAS FINE I THEN PUT A CAN OF SEA FOAM IN GAS TANK AND DROVE SLOWLY A WAYS THEN SPEEDED UP IT RAN FINE SEEMED TO BE DIRTY INJECTORS OR FUEL PUMP. I WNT ON HOME THE ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON THE NEXT MORNING THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS OFF AND IT HAS RUN FINE EVER SINCE
injectors may need cleanin or hav pulse problem-get car scanned--chec underhood for any linkage issues or bad hoses causing vacuum leaks--replace other parts of ignition that are worn
