Yes you do. If it's 4x4, i find it easier to pull the motor.

You might be able to make room to do it without dropping it... but by the time you get your driveshaft off, and gearshift, probably exhaust, and everything else, there isn't much saved by leaving it hanging there. Plus, you need the room to see what you're doing. It has to go back far enough to get the shaft right out so, 8 inches minimum.

If it's automatic, you don't have a flywheel.

If you haven't already changed the Fly Wheel is it manual ****, or automatic if is, automatic it would be a a lot easier to remove the transmission, to change the fly wheel. Other than pulling the motor and going through that hassle if you have a 2 or 4 wheel drive depends to on the job 2 wheel drive drop out the tranny and change it 4 wheel drive and manual you are much better of pulling the motor i have a 1989 GMC sierra 4 wheel drive manual and it was much easier to just pull the motor its more of a personal preference. what ever you think is easier for you. either way you will have to pull one or the other becuase of the bolts around the centre of the fly wheel.

How do I remove my fly wheel?

This is not an easy job and requires a substantial amount of knowledge. you will also need a decent floor jack or a transmission jack. The transmission must be pulled or slid back to get the flywheel off the engine. The first thing is to take the transmission dust cover off or in some cases the starter. The starter needs to come out anyway. This will reveal the torque converter bolts. You can use a pry-bar to turn the flywheel around so you can get to each torque converter bolts. The other option is to turn the crank with a socket and breaker bar from the front of the engine/harmonic balancer. Then you must drop the transmission or if you can slide it back enough to reach the flywheel bolts mounted to the crank. Once you remove the center bolts in the flywheel it should drop out.

How to get fly wheel off of 77 Ford F100, 351 mod, 400 block?

I had to do this on my 1988 F250, if I remember correctly:
Remove in this order:
Driveshaft, Starter, lower cover plate, transmission, torque converter.
Flywheel s/b bolted to converter.
When driveshaft is removed - plug gap in tranny output - between drive shaft and housing - to prevent fluid spillage.
When removing transmission - plug hole in converter to prevent spillage.
When handling converter hold it flywheel side down until - to avoid fluid loss.
I presume you have all the correct tools and a helper.
hope it goes well

I have a clacking noise upon acceleration or neutral idle. It appears to be coming from the transmission. What could be causing this?

I would check your flywheel rise the front of the suburban to get under it make sure for safty you put jack stands under it where the engine oil pan meets the transmission there is a cover you can remove there is four bolts that hold it on with a flash light look at the center of the fly wheel the crank might look like dirt markings if it is the transmission need to come out to replace the fly wheel too much to explain how to remove the flywheel it would be better to take it to a garrage or a transmission shop

My b/f has a 1990 Fleetwood Cadillac...He believes the fly wheel may be broken...Where is the fly wheel and are they easy to replace?

Flywheel is between the motor and transmission the starter actually runs the flywheel to start the motor. To change it you will have to pull the transmission away from the motor to get to the bolts that hold it to the motor. Not the easiest thing to replace by any means.
