Couple of quick questions before posting a solution:

Do you use the truck off road frequently? New Tires? Lifted truck? Brake job? Front end fender bender accident? Front or rear? Does it vibrate/shudder in turns?

There is a recall per my dealership. I have a 2004 F150 that was just doing the same thing this past week. I changed all four tires, alignment, etc. with no results. Finally found out that there is a recall for the emergency brake cable system. Even if the brakes were not on it would vibrate and would seem like I had a flat tire. My truck is in the shop today being fixed and I will know more when I pick it up if there is any additional problems as a result of this. So far, I need to pay to have new rear breaks. Good luck!

The was an error in the recall per dealership. It was a take a look at warning from Ford if this problems exists, and it is not the tires. They are still trying to find the emergency cable that is correct for my truck. It may not be fixed until next week.

Check the universal joint by the transmission. If you hear a rattling noise, then likely that's the problem. I went under my 2001 and the rear u joint is kaput.

You don't want to burn up the trans. I was in the trans business years ago.

1990 f150 transmission up shift to early

Sounds like the passing gear cable is out of adjustment. Get a shop manual and see what the specs are on how to adjust it properly. It is a pretty simple fix.

Recommended mph in 4 wheel drive

50 MPH in 4WD don't exceed you ll burn the transfer case clutches. (Safely stay at 40, why chance it.)

Low 4WD 25 MPH is the max, I recommend no more that 15MPH

Burnt clutches in transferr case 1200 job at the dealer, includes new clutch pack and fluid and 3 days of work, one or two days if you are lucky depending on their work load. (Read your manual)
