Car dies while driving, won't turn over sometimes
On your 3800 Olds motor, the crank position sensor can be the problem...located on the front of the motor harmonic balancer...but first try cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve...located in the air intake assembly...remove and spray clean with injector spray cleaner...clean the spring also...you can replace the IAC with a new one for about $35. Be sure to clean out the chamber too...wipe dry. Hope this helps.

This is my second oldsmobile i have owned. Now there is two positive connections right above where the battery is make sure they are free of rust and they are tight be careful not to over tighten nuts. Oldsmobile's are terrible for those external positive posts.

Im guessing you tried to bypass the key in the ignition/steering column. This is ok unless the actual problem was in the TDM (theft deterrent module) In this case, the 2 wire bypass does nothing. There is another way to bypass this. Check out this link for tons of info and some DO IT YOURSELF options. Ive done several key bypasses and tons of full bypasses. They both work well, it just depends on what part is failing. I think you need the full bypass to eliminate that TDM.

The problem is in the key or ignition. Aside from the key working like a normal key, it also has a chip or transponder in it that is part of the security antitheft system. The key is then read by the ignition and must communicate the correct signal. If there are any break in communication, the system goes into anti theft and locks out the starter. Might be a key issue or an ignition issue. The fact that the light is flashing, indicates key or ignition. If it were solid, then the problem would be the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) that is the main computer of the security system. You can either fix the problem part, take it to a dealer who is authorized to fix it, or bypass it entirely. This happens due to a failed or failing antitheft system. When the system cant communicate properly, it will disable your starter or injectors and show the SECURITY light. Go to this link for info and ways to beat this system yourself.
