Is the tech talking about bent valves or other damage from overheat? If the concern is valves, he can do a cylinder leakdown test (not a compression test) to see if valves are sealing properly, without any further teardown. Damage from overheat, if blown head gasket etc will also show up during that test.

My 2000 dodge neon 2.0, just cut off whwhile I was driving. It needed a water pump like a month ago. Now it just turns over like it jumped time.

Looks like the timing belt broke. It also drives the water pump which I'm sure is what took out the timing belt. That has a interference engine so you may need a valve job if it slammed the valves. 50 50 chance its all done unfortunately....

  6. Inspect the water pump and replace as necessary.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket and O-ring surfaces on the water pump and water pipe inlet tube.

Timing belt

you really should get the pump and tensioner done too, if the water pump goes it will destroy the belt.
a 2.4 at the dealership is probably about $350 +

I belive the timing belt in my 2002 2.4l Voyager broke while driving 70 mph. Is this engine an interference engine???

I "think" it is, there is an updated tensioner also, be sure to replace the water pump. the engine may be trashed.

Want to know if it is a timing belt or timing chain that is required for a 2002 chrysler voyager

It's a belt. Cost is about 800 to replace belt, water pump and front main seal. You'll want to have the water pump and front main seal done while they r in there, will save headache later. Timing belt runs the water pump so if 1 goes, then so does the other.

How do you set the timing on a Plymouth Voyager ? I have to repace a broken timing belt. I was also told to replace the water pump is that true.

It is recommended because if you have to change the water pump belt change since you have to remove it and you save work in the future as we recommend changing the camshaft seals and crankshaft as it saves time and money

Dodge 1997 caravan using water

If you don't see a definate leak from any of the hoses, it is probably the water pump. I have a manual for 1996-2002 vans of this model as I have a plymouth Voyager. They are the same mechanically. If you have the 3.0L V6 and it is the water pump, you are in for a expensive fix as the water pump is located behind the timing belt cover. The pump ia actually ran by the timing belt. I just recently fixed the same issue on my van and it was tough. A Mechanic will charge you for six hours of labor plus parts. I was loosing water just like you are, but once the pump got really bad i could finally see where the leak was coming from.
