Upgrade 4.3 l carb engine to vortec TFI fuel system

I want to upgade my 4.3 l omc marine engine from a carborator to throttle body fuel injection. I have available a 94 s10 blazer doner car with a vortec fuel injected engine. Can I install the vortec intake and associated parts on the mairne engine?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

If its a good doner engine it would be easer to chg.out the whole engine. If not i think you have to chg.heads too, to match the intake. You will also will have to have the computer and the wireing and sensors from the doner, that way everything will work right.

It can be done but it is very time consuming.
I use an 87 Astro van intake sensors and computer on my 86 OMC.
After six years I am still playing with it.
Runs good and easy on gas.
Got lots of info from DIY-EFI.
You HAVE to change programing in the computer.
I am running a closed loop system with one oxygen sensor in the starboard manifold.
Your 94 computer is not as good for a boat because it also controls the transmission.

Just to give you an idea what your in for.

Im in the middle of my project with putting an 95 astro 4.3 engine in my boat.
I had my ECM in for tuning at a really good company here in sweden.
The converted the ECM from automatic > manual
They removed oxygen sensor, EGR controll, VSS signal.
But he said that it would be nice if i can run it in closed loop because
in the original program there is a feature called highwaymode.
If you have same throttel position for a little longer it goes into HW mode and uses O" sensor to lean out the mixture. So he gave me a pretty nice tip and that was to use the EGR port and put a pipe from that port to the exhaust pipe where it turns down in to the sterndrive.
That flow is enough to messure O2. And since this is a cpi injected engine all cylinders will get the same amount of fuel and i only need one 02 messuring point.

We build "street engines for marine use all the time. If it is fresh water cooled there are not that many differences in the engne itself. On engines that are frome the manufacturer with raw water cooling they used ceramic in the water passages to slow the inevitable rusting to come as well as ss valves, hardened exhaust seats, bronze guides in the heads, stainless steel head gaskets as well as brass freeze plugs and a cam to push the torque to more marine usage. I have seen people take and swap in used motors with low miles, put in an "RV" cam, some brass freeze plugs and the thing ran well for years.

That being said, it is correct to say that coast guard regs are quite specific on how fuel is pumped/what can/cant be used in a fuel system on a boat. Marine fuel injection typically runs on open loop and the pump is mounted on the engine with a low pressure cut off switch.. so if there is a leak it will kill the motor.

I am working on making a custom fuel injection system for my boat and if anyone has any ideas/questions/comments, feel free to contact me. I will probably be using the megasquirt or microsquirt system and build a custom manifold since I dont have much space.

Hope this helps

The only issue here is it would not be legal. Fuel items are built specifically to marine standards including injector-orings and anything you can imagine due to the risk of fuel leaks in a boat bilge(a dangerous combo I'm sure you can imagine). The other issue is that boat motors even though they look just like the street version have a totally different power curve achieved with different cams and other design changes. Street fuel injection probably wont work with it. Ive seen many street motor swap ins and the customers were really disapointed with the power loss afterwards. Marine carbs are very high flow and jetted large. Who takes fuel mileage on a boat? If you did youd find it to be attrocious! Anyway Crusaders marine corp makes injection and manifold setups for gm engines but hoestly I'm not sure if they ever did for the 4.3 Hope I helped. Thanks

I have a 1991 Isuzu Rodeo with a V6. When I take the air cleaner off I can see gas leaking from some sort of modulator or something just to the right at the very top.

which engine?
The V6 , it has a real name.
there were 3 v6s used.
what displacement?
sounds like the 3.1L GM V6, not the isuzu 3.2. (2 kinds too)
The GM is the LG6 engine, GM name.
the last carb car , in USA was ISUZU, in 1994.
and before that some very odd , electric carbs. (avoid those)
in 1991
there were 4 engine (1 I4 and 3 V6)
ONLY the 2.3L 4 banger was carb , 2 barrel;
the 3.1L is and was, TFI , so is NOT A CARB.
This TFI has a Real ECU, (EFI system)
and the injector does have seals and can leak.
buy a seal kit and put it in,.
TFI means throttle body injected, x2 in this case
the book shows how to do this, (at mitchells) log in, and read?

the steps. are clear.
he engine is equipped with 2 fuel injectors; both are located in the throttle body.
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. (ask)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the air cleaner.
  4. At the injector electrical connectors, squeeze the 2 tabs together and pull them straight upward.
  5. Remove the fuel meter cover and leave the cover gasket in place.
  6. Using a small prybar, carefully pry the injectors upward until they are free of the throttle body.
  7. Remove the small O-ring from the nozzle end of the injector. Carefully rotate the injector's fuel filter back-and-forth to remove it from the base of the injector.
  8. Discard the fuel meter cover gasket.
  9. Remove the large O-ring and back-up washer from the top of the counterbore of the fuel meter body injector cavity.

Do my 1996 gmc box van engine fuel injection or carburetor

Look.
If you see a fuel rail or a short-throat throttle body, it is fuel injected.
If you see a carburetor... well, I think you get the point :)
From the year (unless it is a non-U.S. model), it is most likely FUEL INJECTED.

Does a 1988 carborated Nissan pathfinder have a fuel pump regulator?

Are you sure it is a carburetor and not throttle body injection? They do look similar.
If it is a carburetor, there would not be a regulator. The fuel pump will either be a mechanical pump mounted on the engine, or a low volume electric pump in the gas line from gas tank to the engine.
If it is throttle body injection (TBI), yes, there is a fuel pressure regulator, probably located near the throttle body. It will have gas lines connected to it (one line will be a return line back to the gas tank) and a vacuum line. The fuel pressure on TBI systems is not as high as multi point injection, usually around 20 psi. You would have to check the specific pressure requirement for your pathfinder.

Take off the air cleaner cover and look at top of unit. A carburetor should have a choke plate right at top of the carb throat. However some Nissans by '88 had a carburetor without a choke-it used an enricher jet controlled by the ecu for added fuel when starting.. On a TBI, looking down at the unit where the air goes in, you will see one or two injectors with a wiring harness connected to them-each injector will have two wires connected to it.
If still unsure, check engine designation on the under hood label. Carbureted engines will have a s letter designation, injected engines will have letter i. To explain: my '87 Sentra is carbureted, so engine designation is E16s, some same engines were injected, so their designation is E16i.

I'm having a problem. I have an 84 mustang gt

The 1984 model could be throttle body injected or a regular 4 barrel carb. The GT model is supposed to have a carb.
CFI is central fuel injection which is like TBI. The throttle body has two injectors mounted in the center, one for each bank.
If it has a carb you may have some adjustments you can make. If it is fuel injected you don't. The computer monitors the engine temp and exhaust gas to regulate fuel mixture.

My Chevy 2500 p/u will only start and run when I pour gas in the carb...if I kill it for 2 minutes , I have to do it again to get it started ...uhg..frustrating !!! One guy told me it was a spider sumthing...

Lets start with terminology. I am assuming the truck is newer than 1987 so you would have fuel injection. No carb.
If it is a vortec engine, either a 4.3 or larger, and built after 1993, it could have central port fuel injection. That style uses one injector and a spider of lines that go to each intake port. This is inside the upper intake manifold.
Vortec engines require more fuel pressure than engines with port fuel injection or throttle body injection. So the first thing you need to do is check base fuel pressure before and after you crank the engine. You'll need a pressure gauge to do it. Normal fuel pressure at idle for a port injected engine is 35psi and 60psi for a central pfi system.

Wont start

simpler that exposing the throttle body just depress the accelerator 3/4 and try to start.

If like before, the vehicle starts... watch the rear view mirror for black smoke

both indicates a leaking injector(s)

Does a 97 cavalier have a carborator or is it fuel injected?

this car is throttle body injected. so yes fuel injected

Fuel not getting to carborator.

The filter is external. Located on the passenger side frame rail, about 4-5 ft from the tank. round, metal (or if previously replaced-- might be plastic). Are you sure you have a carb? 1988 models were throttle body type fuel injection. If it is TBI, you may not be getting power to the internal fuel pump. Are you seeing a fault code (the check engine light flashing)?
