Have you taken the battery back to have it retested? Sometimes even a new one can be bad. Does this only happen after it sits overnight?

It sounds to me that you may have a dead cell in the battery you didn't replace. When replacing batteries that are paired up it's better to replace them both at the same time. The same as you would a set of brakes. That's because if you have two batteries wired together and one of them is weak,( bad cell, smaller cranking power, etc.) it will draw down the other battery untill they are equill. The smoke you are seeing coming from the other battery is more than likely from a bad connection. It could be from a loose connection, it could be corroded, it could be that it is not recieving a charge back to the batteries because of that bad connection. I'd clean the connections and make sure the terminal ends are in good shape. Pull the battery caps and check the water level. If it's low you probably have a shorted cell. You can attempt to remidy this for awhile by adding water and charging the batteries back up. REMEMBER, if you add water, only add distilled water. You can get this just about anywhere including your local grocery store. Also when charging a battery take the battery caps off while the battery charger is running. Good luck, and let me know if this helps or you have other problems.

YOU NEED AN AUTO ELECTRICIAN TO LOCATE THE BATTERY DRAIN & OR BAD CONNECTION . THE TRUNK LIGHT MAY BE STAYING ON WHEN THE TRUNK IS SHUT, ALSO THE ALTERNATOR CAN CHARGE THE BATTERY, WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, BUT IF A DIODE IS BAD IT CAN DRAIN THE BATTERY WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF

As a simple preliminary test, try disconnecting the battery before you let the car stand for a while and see if it will start when reconnected. (If this will not affect radio codes and alarm systems). This will give you an idea if it is the battery or something in the car that is draining the battery.
