If it runs on starting fluid, its not getting fuel pressure or the fuel is not reaching the injectors. Has anybody checked the fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge ?
The Toyota of your year is equipt with a map sensor,it is located on the firewall with a vacuum line leading directly to the intake manifold, This sensor measure engine load and adjust fuel accordingly. This is definetly the problem, make sure the vacuum hose did not come out,Look at the underhood emission sticker for it,it Toyota has a different name for it it might be called boost sensor or pressure sensor.
try unplugging the switch to the mass/map sensor as well as the crank sensor and blowing them both out with break cleaner or an air compressor. thats what i did with my kia rio today and its been running great.
Hello! You have symptoms that point to incorrect fuel pressure. First have the fuel pressure tested as follows; #1...engine running at idle: 13- 20 psi. #2...key on engine off: 23-30 psi. If pressure is incorrect change the fuel pump.
Does the engine "surge" at idle? If so, check the "fuel injection pressure regulator idle air control valve". Apply a vacuum to it; If fuel flows it is not the problem.
