It could be the clutch is slipping so badly that it won't drive; this is the most likely problem with a Toyota. It could be something worse like a broken shaft in the transmission or maybe somebody pranked you by removing the drive shaft. If it is 4 wheel drive, it could be in the transfer case. A remote possibility is a broken axle or rear end problem.
It's either behind kick panel in front of stickshift or behind glove box on right hand side or under the right hand dash top (has release button on front of dash).
You will need to have your foot on the brake to make the stickshift lever move out of park. If it still will not, look for a faulty switch or solenoid coming from the brake pedal. Also, the car key has to be turned on.
Something you might try, if the brake release switch is bad, is to turn the key to ACC and do not start the car. Then see if you can move the lever to neutral, then turn the ignition to "start" and drive normally.
I recently replaced my stickshift in my 1999 GMC Sonoma. Yours should be very similar.
It's really very simple but requires a bit of strength.
- Push the rubber collar down the stick until you see two nuts at the bottom.
- Grab a pair of wrenches (I forget what size they are)
- Put a wrench on each nut and twist them opposite each other
- Put your back into it, they're tough
- Once loose, just unscrew your stick and away you go!
