My 98 ford escort died driving down the road - acting like outta gas.. We installed new fuel pump, new filter, new pressure regulator switch. Getting gas to plugs but still won't start.i was going down the road and the car looses throttle . Had that Rotten
egg smell. It now wont go above 1500 rpms. replaced fuel pump. Cat.
converter ok too. When clutch is let out it jerks and jumps then dies.
Hi, got exactly the same problem! Don't know what the answere is yet.if i disconect the mass air flow meter it goes into emergency settings (limp mode). At least i can then drive it. One of the sensors is not giving out a reading. But don't know which one. I'm thinking might be camshaft sensor, as This won't produce
The information given is quite vague to decide what is the cause for your problem.
The best thing to do is doing a compression test, a fuel pressure test , and scan car computer module to read error code that can address the problem better.
The sulfur smell (rotten egg) may indicate a fuel mixture problem, if one of the sensors is bad or the computer is misconfigured, but to find out where the problem is , you need at least to scan the computer with an ODB code reader.

I doubt the two problems are related. The computer uses an idle speed control valve to regulate idle speed. The valve controls the amount of air entering the intake. You should have a check engine light on and also a stored trouble code for the valve. It could also be a problem with the throttle plate in the throttle body.
You haven't flooded the engine correct, check the spark plugs. Also, how fresh is the gas? Try shaking the car to get the gas mixed up and try cleaning out the cylinders with a torch to blow out excess gas. You should also either try cleaning the spark plugs or replace them if they look bad. It is starting up fine, correct? The alternator is good, right? I believe it is since it sounds like you didn't drive it long enough to drain the battery but check it anyway. By losing power, did the electronics start shutting off first or did the engine die first as this would show whether the alternator is bad or not. Please answer my questions and get back to me on what shut off first when it died and I will help you narrow down the problem with this car.
Intermittent problems like yours are the hardest to diagnose. But if it is getting more frequent, at least, may be easier to find. I would start with a fuel pressure check, eliminate as many possibilities as possible. New fuel filter? Maybe a sensor when warmed up is ...well, that would probably register a trouble code. Just fishing, here, but it just possibly could be an ignition problem when warmed up will start mis-behaving- like a bad coil, or ignition module. Good luck.
fuel filter is under the car on the driver side about middle way back.....but there is a little nozzle on the fuel rail under the hood it looks like were u put air in a tire....get somthing and push it in after u try nd start it to see if there is gas coming through...if there aint u have a fuel pump reset button in the back of the car...but more then likley u r goin to have to replace the fuel pump if u aint getting gas to the fuel rail......
When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the whirring of the fuel pump working. If you don't hear anything it may be your fuel pump. It only lasts a few seconds but that sound is evidence that your fuel pump is delivering fuel. If it is good, then check your fuel filter.
It is was a gas filter problem blocking gas flowing from the pump. What happening was that when it was trying to **** the last drop of gas into the engine it really disturbed dirts inside the fuel filter and made it clogged at fine mesh. And also make sure give sometime for gas delivered into the fuel line it since it was empty when you change the fuel filter. It means you have to keep starting for a while so gas can go up to the fuel distributor then injectors.
1998 ford escort sport engine started making a tapping noise and engine light started flashing. Had oil and water at normal level.
Car has 110,000 miles. Been serviced regularly!
fuel lines are clear.
