Just in case we missed a fuse where would the bower fuse be located.all fuses checked - i had a very small leak in the top hose from the radiator to the engine and that is when all the fans stopped. The result of this was the need to replace to replace the blower motor transister - and downloaded the mechanics manual to assist with the solution. We also went into Honda and they said that it is a common problem with the car when it reaches 6 years old especially with the heat in Australia. does the fan work in any other application? heat? vent? econ?defrost?
is the fan fuse intact? the toggle switch is no good on both sides?"
order a new fan from porsche, a junkyard, ebay, amazon, pelicanpartz, and install it or have it installed.
It appears your fan itself burned out. When a field coil of an electrical fan burns out it usually makes a lot of smoke. The noise could be something that fell in there that stopped the fan from turning freely. I can imagine it heated up under the strain and burned out.
When you restarted it was burnt out so hence no noise and no fan. The smell of the smoke should also be clue. Electrical field coils burning has an awful soury type of smell.
Does it keep running till the batt is flat? It could be the aircon condenser fan running - on the left as you stand in front of the car. This is a common prob with A3s of this age.
I have a '05 3.2L Quattro V6 and suffered the same prob. The batt is in the boot of the V6 and is sealed like Fort Knox so impossible to disconnect. After about 3 days with this the fan running constantly and having to put a charger on it every night I let the batt run completely flat to try and reset the complete system - no DIS lights - no starter motor clicks - DEAD. Then I jump started it and the prob disappeared completely. Everything is working perfectly ncluding the aircon. That was 4 days ago and 'touch wood' I've had no probs since. I know this won't work for everyone but it's worth a try before forking out £300+ for a new condenser fan unit. Good luck!
having driving mine for a yr now, noticed some pulleys without a belt but never thought much about it. Thought aircon just needed service till the belt for alternater, fan, power steering snapped, the mechanic told me then that the other missing one was for aircon. Two belts plus cam belt????? driving too many things ! so just check to see if all belts are still there, they snap easily `cause of the multi purposes....
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN ANOTHER BUICK . IT WAS THE COMAND MODUEL BEHIND THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT, THE SPRINGS THAT OPEN AND CLOSE AIR FLOW WINDOWS
THAT RUN FROM THE UNIT WON'T CHANGE FROM HEAT TO AIR TO YOUR VENTS.YOU NEED A NEW COMAND MODUEL OR HAVE IT REBUILT . IT OPENS AND CLOSES THE VENT DOORS . I GOT MINE REBUILT FOR $50.00 FROM A GUY THAT WORKED AIRCON LINE @GM
GARAGE QUOTED ME $650.00 HOPE THIS HELPS.
GOOD LUCK
