Shift lever out 1990 jeep cherokee does not from drive to park

USA CAR, LHD , LEFT HAND DRIVE CAR NOT OUR EXPORT.
A/T BOX.
STUCK IN PARK MEANS THE LEVER DOES NOT MOVE
no you mean, PRNDL, R D and L are all dead,
but the shifter does no jam up ever.

GRINDS, NO GOOD A/T BOX GRINDS EVER.
I HAVE JEEP MANUALS, MOST.
1ST YEAR COMMANDER, AND IS near same as grand Cherokee in regards to the trans mission, but 2 kids are used.
no VIN posted so I can'T know what is under the hood and behind THE ENGine.
3.7L or 4.7L??? GAS ENGINE or the Diesel>??
2wd or 4wd.

check all fuse first
then scan the cars DLC OBD2 port (16p) for errors called DLC
codes,
if it tells you shift solenoids are bad, then you know what to do next

or the cables under the shift lever box to transmission are rusted and snapped off.
the shift lever must go to DRIVE then below on the actual side of the transmission, the lever there must go to the detent DRIVE
or it fails hard.

This could be the parking PAWL and that is inside the transmission. IT will be expensive to repair.

Check the brake switch on the pedal, if that does not work try to take apart the shifting lever there should be a motor that locks the steering lever try to disable it. have a good day !!

Remove the console.Gear knob.Lever shrouds and rubber boot.It should have 5 bolts holding a plate.Bolts out and it should all lift out.Place in neutral first.Hope this helps

It is next to the gear shift lever.

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

Was the fluid you drained red or black? did it smell like trans or gear oil? With linkage disconnected, could you put trans in park by moving the lever on the side of the unit? Oil condition is likely a separate issue...most "blown" transmissions generally have normal operation of shift, it just dosen't do what you tell it to. two things likely going on are: linkage problem and likely in need of fluid/filter change.

have you tried a rolling shift? leave trans in drive and try moving 4x4 lever. it works on mine!

Just pull up on the 4 wheel drive lever .. You can shift on the fly to part time and full time but you gotta stop and in park or neutral you can shift into 4 wheel lo .. I have one myself .. love those jeeps .. you "understand"
