HOW TO REPLACE A SHIFTER CABLE ON A 1997 FORD ESCORT LX?

Is this an automatic? or standard transmission? If standard, you may be talking about the clutch cable? Usually, the transmissions are controlled by Linkage between the transmission and the shift lever. Better detail if you are DIY is a repair manual. you will want one next time. Your library may have one, you auto parts store, or try filepeep.com if they have it, or try manualslib.com

Auto gearbox

I had a 2004 Tundra that did something similar. The shifter lever is connected to the Transmission through a cable. The cable had corroded and came disconnected at Transmission. The cable needed to be replaced.

Speedometer1998fordwimdstar

follow speedo cable to the transmission ,it should screw on at that point. next take out 1 bolt for y shaped hold down fork and check for a stripped speedometer gear , its plastic pull it straight up and out if teeth are missing check the gear in transmission connected to that one. also since its apart try turning the cable while someone watches it, if it turns smoothly then its ok just replace transmission gear.and reinstall cable. if it makes the speedo jump or turns roughly replace cable as well.your local auto parts stores should have these, if not I know the dealers will.

Cable on top of engine broke on throttle what does it do

Replace the cable with one from your local auto parts store or dealer.
It may be for cruise control if your cruise control no longer works.
Or, it may be for the accelerator pedal.
