It could very likely be a vacuum leak. Almost every runner hose on mine ('03) has split.

If you can get it to a auto parts store that has a scanning tool, then find out what the codes are. That will give you an idea of where to start looking for the problem.

Also had an Astro that started sputtering and popping at low RPM's. Turned out to be a piece of trash in the EGR valve.

My 1996 jeep Cherokee xj will sputter out and die when I put it in drive but when I put it in reverse it will stay running and driving

my guess is the gearing , that reverse has is very low.
and with lower gearing a weaker engine can run
id bet you if you use your right foot, on the throttle as you
go to drive, it will move, or use L gear.
the sputter, is not related to the transmission
Sputter is gross misfiring of the engine, 4.0L?? what engine?
and the top cause of that. is not getting a tune up.
spark plugs. ever do those in 10 long years.'
or spark wires>?
filters, fluids and spark? a tune up.
the Jeep runs a map sensor, so does not sputter with air leaks.
the jeep IAC can stick. and not hold an idle ,in drive.
but you can with a fast right foot, if not , its gross misfire for sure.
your right foot is not gas its air
when you press the throttle you add air and the EFI matches air with fuel. in that order
so if it still sputters, is not the lack of air. see?> spark is next,.

for 100 years folks avoid tuneups, is that you? the classic cause?

While driving 2001 grand Jeep cherokee laredo it started sputtering and stopped as if out of gas( it was not) and the check engine light came on. I'm thinking fuel filter or pump?

When they sputter it is mostly the fuel pump. One way to check is hit the bottom of the tank in the center. The vibration will jar the pump and most times they will start pumping again. This is not a fix, you still have to replace the pump. This is just an easy way to make sure your changing the right part.

2001 Jeep Cherokee Classic shakes and sputters when recranked after driving. Only does it once it's been driven somewhere and ignition is killed, then recranked. Doing it about a week then check engine...

Sounds like a fuel/air problem. Replace fuel filter, check/replace air filter and spark plugs, complete the tuneup and see what happens. If it still happens then suspect injectors. Run cleaner through a tank of gas. If still the same take it to a shop that can plug into your vehicle and verify injectors performance.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls when brakes are applied

My 2000 Grand Cherokee had the same problem, without all the sputtering, it would just die approaching a stop. We could only keep it running by slightly pushing down on the gas petal when coming to a stop. I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, but that didn't change anything. A new mechanic I found replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, and we've had no problems in a week.
