it has a timming chain,which if it hasnt broke i wouldnt be to concerned about it unless youve reached 200,000 they usually outlast the car its self chains are very hard to bust,but if you decide to go forward with this the chain runs any where from 36.00 to 86.00 any where in between i suggest you not pay more then 60.00 4 the chain hope this helps you im 100% its a chain

you will need new upper timing chain and sprockets. Common problem on altima your year. Nissan has TSB for it. First they had us remove the upper timing chain guide, but after that, they had us replace all top chain components.
