If memory serves me right the axel is bolted to a plate on the front differenchel and a large nut on the end that goes thru the hub bearing, if you take the whole shaft out( both ends) i see no problem running it temporary without it.

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS NOT WORKING TO INGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. CHECK WITH DOOR OPEN WHEN YOU PUSH 4 WHEEL SWITCH YOU SHOULD HEAR MOTOR INGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. IF YOU HEAR MOTOR BUT STILL NO 4 WHEEL DRIVE THE GEAR ON MOTOR COULD BE DAMAGED. REPLACE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR.

SOURCE: can i drive my 1999

Yes you can. It's not recommended, but should not cause any problems, as the front drive shaft is not used during 2wd operation.

2001 GMC Yukon XL, should the front drive shaft be engaged when in 2wd position ?

If you do not hub locks on the vehicle then Yes . Both axles turn and they turn the diff which turns the front drive shaft. If you have hub locks and they are disengaged then no the axles will not turn.

Should the front drive shafts be turning when the truck is not in 4 wheel drive

If your transfer case has an "auto 4wd" push button choice then the front shaft will turn all the time. This is due to how the transfer case is designed internally to provide that option.

What is auto 4 wheel drive?

Auto 4 wd is when the Silverado's PCM takes readings from the front and rear driver shaft and when there is any detection that the speeds are different. The Auto 4WD will activate the transfer case to lock it self to 4wd until the front and rear drive shaft are running at the same given speed of rotation.

Clicking in front differrential while in four wheel drive, and in 2wd. sounds like its skipping

I'll take a shot at it even with the limited info provided. Probably one of the drive shaft (half-shaft) u joints. Not too expensive to fix. If the click is from the diff itself, something is worn or broken inside. Read $$$$$!
