There is a canister next to the fuel tank called a purge solenoid. this is a small check ball that allows air into the tank as you are filling it. trace the line comming from you uel inlet nozzle.... the valve is stuck shut, causing the gas pump to shut off because it thinks the pressure in the tank is high.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: 2002 grand prix runs rough, dies service engine

sounds like you have a vacuum leak, check all the vacuum hoses and replace any broken or kinked ones, also check around the intake manifold gasket for leaks. any air leaks after the air flow meter creates 'un-metered' air which inturn will make the car run rough and stall, hope this helps

SOURCE: 97 Grand prix Starts & runs for 10 sec then shuts off

if that doesn't fix it, it could be a problem with the security controls in the car.

Have you tried turning the nozzle? So it can do the fuel swirl on the way down to release air back out

Spitting and sputtering going dead 92 pontiac grand prix

first put in 2 can of injector cleaner in the gas tank when you are low on gas and then put in 2 gallons of gas and drive it that may fix some (cheap quick fix for lots of problems)

Can't put gas in my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

I doubt it.
Usually the problem is a blockage in the fill tube, sometimes the vent for the tank is not working. But there are several components to the EVAP system.
I would check the filler tube first.

GAS SPIT OUT WHEN IM PUTTING IN THE TANK

There's an air return pipe that's supposed to prevent this. Look on the filler neck for a finger sized secondary pipe or hose. Make sure this is not damaged or otherwise blocked.

Spit back can also occur when the tank is nearly empty on hot days. The tank is full of gas vapour and this pressure has to go somewhere. Try adding gas slowly for a couple of seconds, then stopping. The added gas is colder and will cause the vapour to condense, after which you can usually add gas at normal speed.
