1999 Taurus has been sitting 4 years, bad gas clogged fuel filter

Often times the lower octane fuels have some sedement that settles at the bottom of your tank. So when you run out the gas often times these sedenments work there way through the fuel system. Try and fill up with a high octane (91 or higher) and add a fuel conditioner and drive it. This will sometimes burn off the sedement and help to unclog injectors. If this doesn't work then you may need to replace your fuel filters because they may be clogged.

Could be condensation in the gas, or the gas is simply old. Could be fuel deliver isn't happening. Could be fuel line clogged or fuel filter clogged.
I'd start by checking fuel pressure....

auto tech for 15 years you have a crack on the fuel pump return line on the fuel pump assemble I have done many Taurus with the same problem the fuel puddles up on top of the tank and smells bad replace the whole fuel pump assemble and the smell will go away.

How much gas did you put in? You should put in at least 3 gallons, and turn on the ignition switch, but don't turn it to start, let it sit for about 20 seconds to 'prime' the injectors/lines. Try to start it then. If you still cannot get it to start, check the injector rails for gas, there is what looks like a tire valve on top of the engine with a light green, plastic cap.Turn the key on and, with a rag thrown over the valve push in the pin in the center-you should get a healthy stream of gas out of it (use the rag to protect yourself from the spray. No spray? Either a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel regulator, the 'sock' filter in the tank is clogged, or the fuel pump is history. Running a tank low or out of fuel is real bad, because the fuel acts to cool a fuel pump. If it overheated badly while empty, you might have cooked it.

take line off before filter see if gas is coming out at time of key engagement, if not its fuel pump.if yes then reconect and disconnect on outlet side of fuel filter this will tell you if filter is clogged

check first for a possible blocked fuel filter or clogged fuel lines

It is a myth that sugar will mess your car up. Sugar does not dissolve in gas, it will just sit in the bottom of the gas tank. You will need to drop the tank and have it cleaned, and replace the in-tank fuel filter, but anything upstream of the fuel filter will be okay.

your problem appears to be the idle control motor located on the air intake manifold it is a small motor that goes bad quite often. Other items that can cause this is a bad /clogged air filter or a tune up (spark plugs and wires), or clogged fuel injectors. to clean the injectors you can buy a container of fuel system cleaner and pour it into the gas tank and as you drive it cleans the system.

Once the fuel system is cleaned via a tankful of cleaner & gas then the idle controller motor would be next on the list to be replaced.

fuel? bad gas, clogged fuel filter,injector relay, on injector fuel rail, might be pressure release valve ( screw on cap ), turn key on check for fuel pressure- warning have cloth to capture ,fuel, also due to electronics, pls. make this a short period of time
