If I'm understanding you correctly sounds like dimmer switch is defetive or there is an open in the circuit. remove dimmer switch from circuit and use a set of jumper wires and jump the circuit connector and see what happens .If light come on when switch is bypassed the switch was the culprit . If not then your into surgery. Gonna need repair manual and do exactly what it says to hunt for the open, lose wire etc.
Transmission shifts very hard
Check your transmission fluid level as soon as possible.
If you are experience hard transmission shifts, it is possible that the only problem is a low transmission fluid level. Low transmission fluid level can change the operating pressures of the transmission as well as reduce the amount of lubricant present between the clutches and bands and raise transmission temperatures. All these things can cause hard or jerky shifting. You need to identify why the transmission has a low fluid level and refill it as soon as possible.

The fuse block is located under the right side of the dash. Check the fuse called "INST LPS" fuse # 15, it's the one located in the 5th row across and 3rd one down. If the fuse is good, with the ignition in the on position check for 12 volts at the dimmer switch assembly this is a dark green wire. If you have 12 volts replace the dimmer switch assembly, if not repair the dark green wire. Hope this is helpful to you.
