My 1989 5 spd cherokee clutch "popped" while driving home. Is there a spring that broke? What do you think?

Thank you for your comment. We found out that the shaft on the clutch pedal itself broke. Taking it to be welded today. Merry Christmas!

Found out the popping sound was from the clutch pedal shaft breaking. We removed it and took it to a welding shop where it was repaired. Thank you.

What do you mean by "popped" After the popping, what does the pedal feel like now? As far as I know, the clutch control "linkage" on your vehicle is hydraulic. Inspect system for leaks, replace failed parts & bleed. If problem is with the clutch itself, transmission needs to be removed and all components inspected and replaced as needed.

Merry Christmas right back at ya!
It's funny, the only vehicle I have ever seen this happen to in the last 30yrs was MINE... On Christmas morning back in 1975! But, it was a hot-Rod '57Chevy with a really stiff clutch (Zoom). I spent the entire day "power shifting" wherever I went, and stalling it out on purpose at stop lights (then, starting up in 1st gear, on green) Glad it's not serious... last thing you need is a repair bill now!!!

Throw out barring fork doesnot allignment with clutch slave fork too short

Did it pop out of position or what? Or was this after you replaced the clutch or what?

Well on clutch forks ive seen. There is a rounded stud sticking out and goes into a rounded
spot on the that the fork, and the makes the fork pivot.

And theres a spring that snaps the throwout bearing onto the fork. Could either be that
the spring broke, or the fork is not aligned on the rounded stud and has slipped down.

I think the spring broke and made the fork drop down, because the spring holds the bearing
onto the fork and the fork could not have dropped down without the spring either breaking
on popping off. There is usually a rubber boot that covers the place where the fork goes
into the transmission. Pull the boot off and look through the holes where the boot goes.
If somrhing has come off or broken you will be able to tell.

Leaked out all clutch fluid and clutch is out

you must replace the hydraulic slave cylinder for the clutch to work again, it is not as expensive as you may think but if you have never done this type of work before I would not recomend it unless you acquire a haynes repair manual and the reqiured tools to remove the old one reinstall the new and bleed out the air from the system.

97 Jeep TJ sport - Clutch Pedal has gone limp

It's possible your clutch fork broke. Also, check to see if it's a hydraulic clutch. You could have a leak in the hydraulic system. Both would cause your clutch pedal to go to the floor.
