The jeep cherokee has 2 different types of 4 wd systems. the command trac has 2 wd, 4hi, neutral and 4 low. if driving on pavement make sure it's in 2 wd. it also has shift on the fly, up to 60 mph you can move the lever to 4 hi and it will not hurt anything. if trying to go to 4 low, be rolling less than 5mph and put the trans shifter in neutral and move the 4wd selector to 4 low. do the reverse to move back to 4 hi or 2 wd

1995 Jeep Cherokee stuck in 4WD goes into 4 wheel but doesn't want to come out

This is not a great thing at all. The 95 uses the same system as mine , which is a linkage that controls the transfer case. You have to get under the vehicle and check that linkage. It may have come loose and now the lever will not pull it out of 4wd.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 engine automatic 4WD, my transmission began slipping and not wanting to shift into drive or overdrive. I added a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix and it began...

drop the pan and change the filter and gasket, that might buy you some time if it is not too far gone.
i don't know how many quarts of transmission fluid are required for this task but the part store should have it in their computer

How to put a 95 or 96 jeep cherokee sport in 4 wheel drive. handle is left of the gear shift.

You can change on the run but as a general rule stop to change to 4wd.except 2wd to 4wd high.Just slow down to about 15mph and back off the gas.
2wd high is normal running
4wd high(is full time 4wd)this is slippery roads or muddy roads.
4wd high lock For bad and slower slippery and rocky roads.
4wd low lock is for extreme 4wd conditions
Don't use the last 2 on the main roads or transfercase will be damaged
Hope this helps
