If you are just removing and replacing the pads, you will need, i believe a 13mm wrench, a screw driver (flat head) and a "turn in caliper compression tool" because your rear calipers also act as your emergency brake when it's engaged. You will see 2 divits across from eachother on your caliper piston. Once you have the tool inplace and the slots lined up with the tool, turn clockwise and turn the caliper piston in. If it will not turn, then it's defective and will need to be replaced before you can install the new pads. If you need a turn in caliper tool, you can rent one at any autozone or advance auto, pay for it up front and get a complete refund when you are done and bring it back.
Good luck!

Abs light stays on what does that mean? 93 grand marquis

This means you have something worn out in the brakes. It is usually an accurate indicator. You could be low on Brake fluid, but then something is leaking and that is not good.

You need to check the Brake pads, Rotors, and take off the rear Rotors to check the Emergency brakes. Remember to clean the debris off all the sensors you see with Electrical wires on them. Remember to tell the Brake place if you have someone work on it, that you want the Emergency brakes checked.

I have had some clients go to both a Dealer and a Brake place and both places failed to find the bad Emergency brakes.

1993 Mercury Grand Marquis, Brake fluid leaking under left rear door. Brake pedal goes to floor. How can i fix this?

Hi, the reason the pedal goes to the floor is because the brake line going back to the rear axle blew, first you will need to find where the hole is and cut out the bad section, usually you can find a clean spot further down that you can cut out the bad spot. you will need to go to the parts store and get a new piece of brake line and a tubing cutter and a double flare kit. usually you can rent one of these to save money.

What kind of Rear brakes does a 2001 Grand marquis have? phenolic piston or steel? Also is it pads or shoes?

The rear brakes are rotors for the service brakes and an internal drum for the Emergency brake. So you will need pads for the driving(service) brakes and shoes for the Ebrake.

Whether you have phenolic(plastic) caliper pistons or steel depends on the options your car has. The heavy service calipers use steel. These are for Police, Taxis, and Performance options. Have your VIN# handy. In some years the driveshafts were bigger too!

The pads have clips on the back of them. The clips are different sizes for the phenolic or steel pistons. I have a 2002 Grand Marquis LSE and it has the heavy duty parts for the performance version. Remember new brake hardware. When in doubt, get both types of pads and return the extras. If you are getting the rotors turned, jack both sides and make your decision about pads when you remove them.

The E-brake drum surfaces inside the back of the rotors for the rear brakes usually always corrode and can't be turned. Good Luck
