Bad thermostat

Now that you've eliminated the thermostat, it could be a number of other things. Don't drive the car too far until you've fixed the overheating problem - overheating can destroy an engine.

That split ribbed hose you see is plastic wire loom - it carries and protects electrical wires, and is not the cause of overheating.

1. Low coolant level
2. Radiator hose split/cracked, causing low coolant level.
3. Head Gasket - leaking, causing low coolant level
4. Thermostat - stuck closed (you eliminated this possibility)
5. Radiator cap - worn/damaged
6. Radiator fins - obstructed by debris/cardboard
7. Water Pump belt - missing/broken
8. Heater Core - leaking, causing low coolant level
9. Intake Manifold Gasket - leaking, worn, damaged
10. Radiator Fan Relay - faulty
11. Radiator Fan Blade - broken, missing
12. Radiator Fan Sensor/Switch - faulty
13. Water Pump - leaking, causing low coolant level
14. Radiator Fan Motor - faulty

My primary suspects would be Rad Fan Relay (#10), and
Rad Fan Switch (#12).

is it runng smooth?
if it is its probly a bad waterpump!!
a blown head gasket will make it run rough!!!!!!!!

Is there any chance the thermostat got installed upside down? Flat end down into the engine is right. How hot does it get? Did you turn the heater on to circulate through it and get the air out of the heater core?
Thermostat usually open at 190 degrees, you may need a "candy thermometer" to double check the water temp in the rad. Get it in housewares. It's possible the thermostat is defective, I've seen that before. Hope this helps.

A certain amount will run into resavor or draw out after it is shut off no matter what the tempature is, the only exception is if it is low on coolant in the radiator it will draw out of the resavor to maintain the right amount to the cooling system. but when engine is running it should not do either one because the coolant is flowing.

I had the same problem with my 1993 Liberty LX. Remove the thermostat (located inside bottom radiator hose engine connection - take the connection off and thermostat is inside). Reassemble (minus thermostat), reconnect bottom hose. Slowly (very, very slowly) refill the radiator and remove the bleed plug ( located beside the top hose connection to the radiator - a black square plug with a phillips head cross in the middle). When the radiator is full and clear water (no air bubbles) is coming out of the bleed point, replace the bleed plug and then the radiator cap.

Run the engine for five minutes (approx) or until normal engine temperature is reached. Allow the engine to cool down and recheck the water level - fill if necessary ensuring that the bleed plug is open and clear water is coming out of that point. Replace Bleed plug and then radiator cap. Run engine for five minutes (approx) and then test dive. If the engine overheats keep filling the radiator until there are no air bubbles coming from out of the bleed point.

This fixed my overheating problem. Good luck and safe motoring.

It sounds like you have air pockets in your cooling system. Those engines have bleed valves strategically placed about the engine. At the radiator filler neck it looks full but in reality you're low on coolant. They're a bugger trying to eliminate the air pockets. That's what it sounds like with the informaion you gave.
