The dome lamp receives power from the 10 amp micro fuse located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) on the M1 circuit. This circuit is HOT at all times. The ground path for the lamp is provided in two different ways. One way is through the door ajar switches. Circuit M2 connects to all the door ajar switches from the dome lamp. The switches are case-grounded to the body. When a door is opened, the plunger in the switch closes, completing a path to ground. The second ground path is through the headlamp switch. Circuit M2 is spliced in with the door ajar switches. When the operator turns the headlamp switch to the dome lamp ON position, a ground path is provided through the switch on the Z1 circuit. This ground terminates at the instrument panel left center support. The time delay relay is used to allow a time-ON function for the ignition switch lamp. Power for the relay is received on the M1 circuit from the 10 amp fuse located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC ). When a door is opened, or the headlamp switch is moved to the dome lamp position, a ground path is provided for the relay on the M2 circuit. This energizes the relay, closing the contacts. When the relay contacts are closed, power is provided through the relay to the M50 circuit. The M50 circuit supplies current to the ignition switch lamp in the steering column. Ground for the lamp is provided on the Z3 circuit. This circuit splices with the glove box lamp, the ash receiver lamp, and the PRNDL lamp. The Z3 circuit terminates at the instrument panel left center support. So, I would check the time delay relay since it supplies power to the circuit. Also, check for a good ground at the instrument panel left center support.
Hi Houston, My problem is that when the drivers door is opened it does not activate the dome light. All the other doors activate the dome light when opened. The drivers door is the only door that when opened, will not activate the dome light. I just need to know where the dome light switch is located for the drivers door only on a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT. It is NOT located anywhere in the door jamb like most vehicles as far as I can see. I do understand how it all works making the circuit complete when the door is opened and dont need all the technical terms. Just need to know where this switch is located so I can start there. Thank you
Mr Nutter is correct, the switches are integrated into the door latches not the hinged side as in most vehicles.
You will need to look at the latch to determine that, most of the time it is something simple that can be visually seen (as in dirty, wiring insulation, etc) but sometimes it does require the replacement of the latch assumebly. Take a look first before you purchase.
Houston, Quick question. How do I replay to you when using fixya? By clicking comment or is there a better way ?
If you make a comment on this thread, I will get an email telling me about it, and the next time I boot up I will get the email and answer.
Si Is that the best way, to click comment ? This is my 1st time using fixya. I seem to have accidently created at least 3 threads on the same subject.

FIXYA has recently undergone revisions... and is (in my humble oppinion) not as 'user friendly' as its previous version...
I also keep getting copies of your 1st response to me. At least 4 or 5 times now.
Yes, it is the only way at the present time to contact me, other than clicking on one of my ads - which they would charge you for.
And I totally agree with My Nutter on the new site being as user friendly as the old site!
That should have been NOT as user friendly, either the site deleted my NOT or my fingers needs washed!

The switch is in the door jamb .
The switch is actuated by the movement of the small rod that stops the door from opening beond preset bounds somewhere near the center of the door .
You can manually actuate the dome light by turning the small dial ( interior light brightness control ) on the left underside of the dash to the full on possition.
I will note that if you choose to use this method of turning on the interior lights , you may experience a dead battery one day due to leaving the switch in the ON possition when you have exited the vehicle for the night...
Hi Troy, Thanks for the attempt to help. However, the manual way to turn the dome light on on these cars is not the left side under the dash. It is on the headlight switch which is on the steering arm. Also (as I said in my note) there is no switch anywhere on the door jamb. That is why I am having a problem in the first place.
Houston Hurlburts answer should aid you along ,mate. It looks as though the switch is the grounding of the latch mechanism on the Dodges...

You need to look in teh door jam near teh top end across from the dashboard if the switch isn't there you will need to open up the panel under the dash near where your left foot rest and see if that switch somehow came free and moved inside the door frame. If you find nothing check for the switch on the door itself, it will be along the front edge of the door. If no switch is located there or you find a hole where it used to be open the door up and put the switch back. My 2003 has the switch in the door frame just like normally found so I assume your should be there as well.
James, Thanks but it is not in any of those locations. We already found it. It is in the door latch in the door. It is built right into the latch itself.
It happens, they were making so many changes during that time. They had one version come out early 2003 production that was basically the same as the 2002, they had a mid year production change and a late year production change that looked more like the early release 2004. Good luck with this hope you get the problem fixed and I'm glad you found it.

Mr Nutter actually said that it was located in 2 different places. In the door jamb and in the door stop. He didnt mention door latch at all. So it is definitely in the door latch that when closed holds the door latched shut ? If so, do I need to replace the door latch so long as the wiring is all good ?
The door switch is in the door, closes to the latch that keeps the door shut. It's extremely hard to get out, but you should see two wires going to the switch just above the door latch. Take off the panel, reach into the door (facing away from the engine, right below where the door handle is, but on the inside) and you should find it.
