Without a doubt, yes. You can visually verify this by opening the hood, and looking on the drivers side firewall, it's mounted to the firewall, and the master cylinder is attached to it. It's a big, round metal can looking part. Hope this helps.

Why is it hard to push on the brakes

The most obvious cause for a hard pedal is simply not enough vacuum. Check the brake power booster by pumping on the brake pedal while the car isn't running. Continue pumping until you've "bled off" the vacuum from the booster. Hold the pedal down while you start the car. The pedal should go down a bit more beneath your foot. If it doesn't, then you should examine the connection between the vacuum hose of the brake power and the engine's vacuum.
Replace the brake power booster if the connection's fine, which would fix the hard brake pedal problem.

It may be your calipers need replaced. Check them for signs of wear. Look at the metal spring where the brake pads sit.
Apply tension to the pad and see whether you hear a pop. If you do, the brake pad is moving too much on the bracket. Replace the caliper. This could help the hard brake pedal.

Hard braking

veh, comparisons. that be bad idea.
power assisted brakes very greatly in that word POWER.
first off, the brakes need to great.
then the assist active
try driving with the booster (safely) defeated. (pull hose and plug it)
is that 6 times harder to brake, that is normal.
if the same, then the booster is failing, they can.

Brake failure

If you are talking about the brake pedal being stiff and too hard to push, then working easily again - it sounds like you temporarily lost the power assist. This will happen again and it is not safe to drive until properly repaired.

Many decades ago cars had no power assist and took much more foot pressure and much longer distance to stop. So your brakes were working, just not the assist.

The power assist is provided by a vacuum line from the engine. The likely causes of the failure are: stalling or stopped engine, leak in hose from engine to brake assist booster or leak in the diaphragm inside the brake booster. There are also other much less likely causes from brake fluid lines and the master cylinder. Regardless, don't drive knowing the brakes are likely to fail.

Would a failing vacuum booster effect the brake lights?...It seems when the pressure builds back up they work. When it drops they go on for a second then go out.... ALSO would a failing booster cause a...

The booster uses vacumn to assist your foot pressure. A leaky seal or diaphragm in the booster or a bad hose from the engine to the booster will cause the pedal to drop as it loses power assist. I think the brake light switch is mounted under the dash by the brake pedal. Fix the booster now, it may save your life.

Have an '88 corolla sedan (manual), after brakes used in quick succession, brake pedal looses all assistance and pedal goes hard, resulting in poor brakes...any ideas

this is probably normal. your power brake booster operates by storing engine vacuum to be used later to assist the brakes. when you pump the pedal repeatedly in a short period, the stored vacuum gets used up and it does not have sufficient time to build up the vacuum needed to effectively assist with braking. it generally takes a few seconds to build up sufficient vacuum from when you let off the brake pedal to when you press it again. however, brake boosters can fail over time (it's not uncommon, but it does happen), so if this is a new development for this vehicle, you may need to replace the brake booster or check the vacuum line and the check-valve between it and the engine
