You can do both. It's always a good idea to top off the radiator, but I would also make sure the overflow reservoir is full too. Make sure the engine is cool before removing the radiator cap!! It is under pressure when hot and can burn you. Also, make sure you add the correct coolant. The Kia should have the green coolant but there are many types now. If you're not sure, just add water. If your system is low, it means there is a leak somewhere which you will want to find.
SOURCE: coolant in coolant reservoir did not fill low level in radiator
you must drain air out of system
so when engine is warmed up, just unscrew slightly the thermo time switch which is the highest sensor and unit in cooling system besides the reservoir, until alittle air releases then when antifreeze starts coming out then retighten to specs. BE VERY CAREFUL !!!! LOOSEN VERY SLOWLY AND NOT COMPLETELY REMOVE FOR THIS CAN CAUSE BURNS. MIGHT WANT TO USE A RAG AROUND SENSOR. If this doesnt solve it then make sure you have the correct rad. cap. Also that the filling hose is not clogged as well as the little port on radiator.
SOURCE: Radiator fluid spewed everywhere.
if it is a 4.0 engine more then likely the water pump bearing failed. It does not matter that there is coolant in the bottle. That bottle is there for coolant overflow from the radiator when it is under pressure. If you see on the front of the engine coolant on the bottom crank pulley the water pump is at fault. fill it with water you don't want to spill or waste any coolant in the radiator cap not the bottle start the car get it hot and check for leaks. Water pumps fail alot on the 4.0 engines or 2.5 if equiped. hope this helps.
Add a mixture of one-half water and one-half antifreeze to the radiator. Fill it right up to the top.
Fill the overflow/coolant reservoir with the same 50/50 mixture.
Leave the radiator cap off, turn the engine on and let it run until the radiator "burps": You will see the coolant level drop and may see or hear a large air bubble come to the top as the system burps.
Keep an eye on the temperature gauge throughout this process.
Refill the radiator to the top and coolant reservoir as needed.
Put the radiator cap back on.
