During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

(note after you have loaded the operating system you must go back and change the first boot device to your hard drive)

The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:

There are no advanced BIOS options?

the advanced bios was only a diagram
if you do not have the boot from cd option make sure you can see the drive in windows explorer if you cant see this cd rom it might be a power or registry problem
make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem

    Close all open programs
Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs ( ) next to the following folders
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SYSTEM
    CurrentControlSet
    Control
    Class
    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
    Upper Filters
    Lower Filters
    Upper Filters.bak
    Lower Filters.bak
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
    Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

    hope this helps

Bought a dimension 4700 at the local goodwill and am having trouble getting it working

It sounds to me like the on-board HDD controllers are dead. Have a look at the motherboard... I'll wager you'll see a fried capacitor right in the middle. Common Dell failure :(

I am trying to re-install windows xp on a DELL dimension 8300 but it does'nt boot it can go to the BIOS and everything but it say Boot.mgr is missing

You should use the bootable Windows XP CD to start the installation.
To do that, you must first enter the BIOS in the Boot Options select the DVD drive as first (so that it will boot from CD/DVD first, instead of the hard disk). Save and Exit, insert the bootable Windows XP CD in the drive and when prompted to do so, "press any key to boot from CD-Rom".
Hope the above helps.

I get black screen with a aflash of the error but its to fast to read. It is just a flash then nothing. Just black screen. Dell Dimension 8500 xp sp1 stock no upgrades or changes. Thanks!

If you ever saw operating system logo such as windows xp then the issue is possibly with the hard disk. You will need to recover the system with your recovery disc in that case. If no system logo, then you may need to check the fans on CPU and make sure it is turnning ok when booting, also check the memory, unplug some of the memory stick and try or replace the memory. Then the hard disk. You can use a bootable CD or USB stick or floppy disk to boot and see if any of the hardware other than hard disk are malfunctioning.

Dell dimension L800CXE I am trying to install xp home installed new hard drive changed boot sequence to cd first then hard drive goes to post screen the goes completely black and has the error insert boot...

Hello Wademyd,
It seems that the installation CD that you have is not a bootable CD.. must be old one.
Please down load the boot disk for windows from http://www.bootdisk.com or follow the Microsoft article link given below:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994
Do not be intimidated by the article, although it looks big but there is very little that you need to do, rest of it is general instructions like where can you order a new CD from etc...
OR
Simple solution is to borrow Bootable Windows XP installation disk and install it using the serial Key that has been given to you.

Please let me know if that helps and please rate the solution if it helped you.. it will not cost you anything but will make a difference for me :)

All the best and kindly let me know in case you need any further assistance.

Regards,
Srinivas
