Disposals rust out and need replacement.

Check a couple things first.
Run paper towel around top of disposal to see if moisture is leaking from around sink basket or dishwasher hose connection. Then check where tailpiece connects on side of disposal.
If these places are dry, the disposal has probably rusted out.

I wrote instructions for disposal replacement:

When I worked apartment maintenance, we replaced disposal with same brand disposal.
That way we didn't have to change out sink basket or change pipes.
How to change disposal: Disconnect p-trap and tailpiece going into disposal.
Rotate connector disk clockwise that holds disposal to sink basket.
Before installing new disposal.
Attach electric wire to new disposal.
Attach dishwasher tube to new disposal. Knock out plug inside dishwasher opening.
Push new disposal up into place, and attach to old sink basket with new connector disk.
Use new connector washer.
Re-assemble tubular pipe.

If this is your home, you want new sink basket that comes with new disposal because it looks shiny and new.
Buy a tub of plumbers putty also.
Remove old sink basket and clean opening.
Put finger-size roll of plumbers putty around sink opening, and then push new strainer basket into plumbers putty.
Tighten basket from below, wipe away excess putty around sink opening.
Install new disposal as described above.

Tips for tubular pipes:
When taking apart tubular pipes, start at p-trap and take apart as few pieces as needed to do job.
On image below loosen both upper and lower nuts, trap falls loose, and then work on disposal.
Any tubular drain pipe that gets moved while working under sink needs to be disassembled, cleaned and re-assembled.
Metal pipes have rubber washer >> always use new rubber washers.
Plastic pipes have plastic washers > plastic washers can be cleaned and re-used.
Plastic washers have flat side that goes toward nut, tapered side away from nut.

When reassembling tubular pipe, we use rectorseal on washers and joints.
Apply good amount on washer just before pushing washer in place and attaching nut.
Apply rectorseal where lower p-trap comes together.
Rectorseal will enLeaking from the bottom of the disposal in the - geno_3245_177.jpgn pipes won't leak.

Garbage disposer leaking at bottom

Since you have checked all pipes and see no leaks next please check the area around the top and bottom of drain housing. If that's not leaking there is a gasket inside the disposal that could fail and cause water to leak into the motor area and then leak through the bottom of the unit. Generally in my experience replacing the whole unit is a time saver because access to that gasket is a pain and finding the right gasket can be timely. Depending on how old the unit is I would just replace it.

My badger 5 is leaking from the bottom in several areas. The reset switch n a Lil whit table n around the screws. How can I fix it?

1) Copy following link for garbage disposal installation tips, parts resources, and manuals.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-repair-and-install-Garbage-disposal.html#replace

2) When disposal rusts out, or bearing seal breaks, the disposal begins to leak from bottom.
It might be possible to take apart and replace bearing, if you can find that specific part and have specific tools and sealer needed to seal the bearing and repair rusted disposal.
Probably easier to replace disposal.

My badger 5 disposal is leaking from the side whats wrong

Check where leak is coming from.
1) Run water until leak starts. Use dry paper towel near top of disposal to see if sink strainer is leaking.
2) Move paper towel down and check where dishwasher connects to disposal.
3) Move paper towel down to tubular drain tailpiece.

4) Water should run down side of disposal if sink strainer, dishwasher connection or tailpiece are leaking. You can fix these problems using tips below.

5) If disposal is rusted out, then water will leak out of bottom or side of disposal body.
There are no repairs or repair parts for disposals.

Leaking from the bottom after removing something that got stuck in the spinning peace

Check a couple things.
Use paper towel and see if top of disposal is damp or wet. The basket strainer might have come loose and water is leaking down.
Fill sink and then release water all at once and check strainer basket and dishwasher hose.
Check where tubular pipe connects to side of disposal. Sometimes this joint can leak, and then water appears at bottom of disposal.

If top of disposal is dry and tubular pipe is not leaking, then disposal is suspect.
Disposals rust out, and dislodging something from cutter plate can open final crack.

If basket strainer is leaking, and disposal is older than 5-8 years, you might consider new disposal since disposal has to be completely removed to reseal basket strainer. See link below for basket strainer steps.

Leakingfrombottom

Are you sure that it is leaking from the bottom and not around drain connection or mounting flange at bottom of sink. If it leaking around drain line you can try tightening hex head bolt that hold drain line to disposal. Also if that is where it's leaking and you cant stop it you can get a replacement gasket from hardware store. If it's leaking around mounting flange you can try tightening three slot headed bolts and see if that helps. There is also a gasket that fits between tiangular shaped mounting flange and bottom of sink that is replaceable. If it is actually leaking from the bottom of disposal then you will need to replace the disposal. hope this helps. Thanks

Water drippinp from the bottom of badger 5

Check all of your seals. Wipe your hand all the way around your disposal to check for moisture running down. Pay close attention to the areas where there are seals, like the top where the main gasket is located and the side where your drain connects there are rubber gaskets that can begin to leak. Also check where the dishwasher drain connects if applicable. If all gasketed areas are ruled out than unit itself may be leaking and need to be replaced. I hope this helps.

I have an Insinkerator Badger 5 garbage disposal that is about 4 years old. It has started leaking water from the very bottom right from the electrical connection. Do I need a new unit or is this something...

Press a piece of chewing gum in the leaking area--and if that doesn't do the trick --which it wont of course Throw the darn thing away--buy a Evolution Elite by Insinklerator--pretty quiet about $200.00 though--worth it..
