your need to install the driver from you cd/dvd driver which is included when you purchase it. try to reinstall driver, much better install anything what drivers available from your cd/dvd driver. connect all cables, the power cable and the usb from your scanner to computer, then restart the computer and try to scan.
Well, if the computer does not even boot from the recovery disc, i would suggest that you take out your drive and backup the files you want to keep and format the drive. Install windows on the clean drive and it should work perfectly again. Always remember to keep your virus protector updated. Hope this can help.
If the computer was "new" and was shipped with Vista installed, the manufacturer probably "designed" the computer for Vista, and did not create/include device-drivers for Windows XP.
So, trying to install XP will not work.
So, insert the Microsoft Vista CD-ROM (the one shipped with the computer, not a CD-ROM purchased from a retail store, nor borrowed from a friend), and boot from it, and reinstall Vista.
What manufacturer/model of laptop? Some manufacturers will ship you a set of CDs/DVDs to replace the ones that were shipped with the new computer.
