When powered-on, and *NOT* connected to a computer, most ThinkVision LCD monitors will flash, for a few seconds, the IBM ThinkVision "logo", before going into "power-saving" mode. If you don't see that, then it's time to spend about $120, and buy a new 19" (not 17") LCD monitor.

That is the exact one to replace. use a 25 volt. the manufactures use 16 volt as they are cheeper.

Sounds to me your high voltage powersupply is out. To repair open monitor and remove high voltage powersupply. Inspect the caps on the board. Look for the ends of the caps to be mushroomed out. Replace these caps, usally 470 uf caps. Replace with 25volt caps. Might also be some 1000uf caps as well. This is a common problem with all LCD monitors.

Exactly. replace all the 16v caps with 25v. 99% of the time this will fix the issue. Nice link!!!

skeltonh, Have you connected your L170 to a different "known-good" PC that has ALL power-save and screen saver modes disabled? Have you connected an old monitor to your PC to see if it will act same way as the L170? 12fixlouie

IBM ThinkVision 17" Monitor displays for 1 second then black

This seems to be a common problem with these monitors. Have a look very closely and see if you can still see something there. From there, either send it to get repaired, or, if you are handy with a soldering iron, open it up and replace the 4 main capacitors (at least one of them will be "popped", but it is handy to replace them all.

In order to open the monitor, you will need to remove the stand, and make sure you get all of the screws out before attacking it with a screwdriver.
I have 5 IBM monitors at work with the same problem, and opening them up has shown the popped capacitors.
Again, only recommended if you know what you are doing. Screwing it up will leave you with nothing.

LCD (IBM) monitor power light is green but no display

Make sure the monitor lead which goes behind the computer is in correctly and has not come loose.

Unscrew it from the PC and put it back in again.
