Your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) will tell you. It is located on the dash on the driver's side of the car (where the windshield meets the dash). It's made to be read from the outside of the car. Put your VIN in here and it will tell you the engine type and more (this assumes your engine hasn't been replaced). http://www.vindecoder.net/

Hello twobasko89: My name is Roger and I will answer for you. The 98 escort had one of two engines. You have either a 2.0 SOHC. engine or a 2.0 DOHC. engine. If you look at the VIN. number in the lower left side of the dash.Count over to the 8 th. digit. If it is a 3 then you have a 2.0 DOHC. engine. If the 8 th. digit is not a 3. Then you have a 2.0 SOHC. engine. SHould you need further help please just ask. Please rate the quality of your answer as this way we can tell you received the correct answer.
