Sounds like the latch is sticking on the door striker, try spray lubricant into the locking mechanism where the latch is and tighten all the screws

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trec - rear passenger door handles

only way to repair is to replace the handles. this is a common problem they use a toothed circle to work the lever and it wears and jumps a tooth basically and it will pop the tooth off if you push it back.so replacement is only fix

Vw golf mk4 my rear passenger door willnot open with central locking key system. i can't even open it from the inside, pull the door handle and the lock pin rises but door won't open. i believ

This worked for me on 2008 Mk5 Golf, after the rear passenger door would not open fro outside or inside.

Hold the inside door latch open and keep it extended, then with the key fob open and close the door locks (still holding the inside latch open). Keep locking and unlocking the door, then it made a kluck and it released.

Rear passenger door won't stay closed

Door latch on door itself is in closed position if it will not close at all. In this case, open door and pull outside handle hard to pop open door latch. If you have door opening at random, door latch needs replacing or door catch on body is loose.

97 Mercury Mountaineer driver side door won't open. Outside handle flops around; inside handle won't open door

Try a slim jim first, down the side of the window. Or AAA or locksmith. If no luck, remove the seat first. Find the screws and bolts around the door handle and arm rest. Most Ford's have screws around the outer side of the panel. I don't believe your's does. The panel lifts or pops off. Once the panel is off, you can reach down and open the door. Just a note. I have done some to where the panel came out in pieces.

The inside door handle on the back passenger door is lose and will not open the door.

Remove the door panel, follow the tension bar back to the inside handle, and there should be a cir-clip that fits over the inside handle to stop it comming loose. If you look hard, you will find it in the bottom of the door skin, but for a few pennies, get a new one, you just slip it on teeth facing towards the outside of the door, and it should stay there. Let me know how you get on, Regards Dave
