Protein skimmers that use a water pump need to have their pump serviced regularly. You will also have to clean the collection cup from you skimmer on a regular basis. Depending on your tank load you may need to do it as often as once a day or once a month.

SOURCE: I just bought a protein skimmer for my aquarium but it didn't come with a manual. Is it easy to set up?

There are number of complicated steps that go in to settingup a skimmer. Because it is such a heavyand often expensive piece of equipment, I recommend that you only install itpersonally if you have prior experience. If not, I suggest contacting a professional to do it for you. If you think you are up to the challenge, please see thisYouTube video with step by step instructions:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLAgZopwyDM
