SOURCE: magnum 257 it will not transmit on lsb or usb it will on am and f

With SSB you have to put audio on the carrier you cant just key the microphone and expect it to output a signal unless you talk into the microphone at the same time this is how SSB works.
So if you talk and the meter starts to move then its ok, if you talk or whistle and nothing moves then the circuit on the SSB side of the unit is faulty.

Magnum 257HP ,Poor TX audio , tried several mics ,SSB ALC , Bias no effect . Did not align TX lower stages . AM , FM are perfect , all RF power outputs perfect , looks good on scope with generator but...

That mod that magnum does really ups the sensitivity. so much thats is too much. If that model has a switch for the compressor turn it off. It will help 100% and make it sound decent not twangy and over modulated. Just the design of these newer exports are not like the old ones.

I have a Mod 75-830 installed in a BMW motorcycle. Each time the unit is powered down, it goes back to ch 9. is there a way for the radio to remain on a given channel?

The unit needs constant voltage to keep channel memory. So if you have it wired to accessory, every time you turn it off, it looses memory. You need to wire it to constant voltage, and turn it on/off manually.

Magnum 257 6 digit display

To tune frequencies in either 10 kHz or 100 kHz increments,
press the STEP button until the desired digit is
flashing. Rotate the FREQUENCY control in either direction.
The entire frequency range of the Magnum 257
can be stepped through in 10 or 100 kHz increments.
To tune in 1 kHz increments, press the STEP button
until the 1 kHz digit flashes on and off. Rotate the FREQUENCY
control. NOTE: When stepping in 1 kHz increments,
you are limited to tuning within a 10 kHz
frequency range.

Operator/instruction manual

ghilger, First off, has your radio been converted to open up all the other channels(including CB)?? That has to be done first, or it's locked in the ham freq's. I think the factory manual is pretty well detailed, but i've been around radios my whole life. The mode button does the changing from am/fm/usb/lsb.Here's from the manual;

MODE: Operating Mode. Press the MODE control to select the operating mode. The operating mode is indicated on the liquid crystal display: am, fm, usb, or lsb.
* See, there is 2 different functions for each button. One set of functions are by just pushing the buttons, the other set of functions are obtained by pushing the function button first. The function button is activated by pushing in on the clarifier knob.
*Here is for saving of freq's;

Memory Save. To save in memory a specific
frequency and operating mode, select the desired mode and rotate the FREQUENCY control to the desired frequency. Press the FUNC button, and then press the M.SAVE button. S will appear on the LCD next to the frequency. While S is displayed, immediately press any of the memory channel buttons (1 - 5). The mode and frequency is now saved into memory. If the S indicator disappears before you press the memory channel button,
the information will not be saved and the process
must be repeated.

M.LOAD: Memory(Recall). To recall, any of the saved memory channels press the M.LOAD
button. L will appear on the LCD for several seconds. While the letter is displayed press the desired memory channel button (1 - 5). The programmed mode and frequency will be displayed.,
If you have any more questions about the radio, repost them here and I'll try to walk you thru them. The radio is a very good ssb rig, especially set up with a power mic. Hope this helps,, Mechanic
