The humidity control never goes low enough to operate solenoid to add water. The company insists our humidity is sufficient but we get bad static shocks, dry skin, throat and nosebleeds the very thing this is supposed to eliminate. When I set in test mode, it works fine so there is no water supply problem. Any Ideas ?
Since my inquiry, I lost electric to my home and for some reason, the humidifier now works. I am not sure why and can only guess the power outage must have reset the unit to make it work.
Go Figure.
Thanks for the reply.

I have no water going to my Aprilaire 550. The copper tubing from the water line to the hot water tank may be the issue, but I've turned it counter clock wise and nothing has been released to the Aprilaire.
Every year I have a problem with this unit, and I hate it ,but am unemployed and living in a cold climate and am experiencing problems now with nose bleeds and dry skin now that this doesn't work.
I am trying to fix this myself but do not even know what the parts are. I've downloaded an installation manual....to try and figure out what I can do to clean tubes out, restore flow to the Aprilaire and possibly replace a bad part.
I have no idea what I am doing, so any help is appreciate.

Your
Aprilaire Humidifier is designed to operate in conjunction with your furnace
blower motor. Most installers wire a humidifier to operate when the furnace is
calling for heat. To determine if your Aprilaire Humidifier is maintaining
proper humidity, turn up the heat temperature 5 degrees above the current room
temperature on your thermostat and set your humidifier control to call for
humidity. The humidifier control is located on the cold air return duct.To set your humidifier control to call for
humidity, turn the control dial to the off position and slowly rotate the dial
until you hear a “click” on the control. You should also hear a click at the solenoid valve located on your
Aprilaire unit.The humidifier control
will have a click point at the current relative humidity level in your home. If
the current relative humidity is 45% or the outdoor temperature is above 60F,
the control will only operate the humidifier in the test mode.

No click at the solenoid valve indicates
an electrical problem.Contact your
heating and air conditioning dealer to further check the electrical
components of your Aprilaire Humidifier.
The click sound at the solenoid valve
indicates there is electricity to the solenoid valve.By turning the dial of your humidifier
control to a setting above the “click point” you should see water coming
out of the drain line within a few minutes which would indicate your
humidifier is working.
If the solenoid valve makes a click
sound and there is no water draining from the unit, this would indicate
the flow of water is being obstructed.
1.To
determine if water flow is being obstructed, turn the dial of your humidifier
control to the off position. The first
location you would want to check for an obstruction would be at the saddle
valve located on the water line supplying water to the humidifier. When
checking the saddle valve, you want to make sure it is completely open. This can be done by turning the valve all the
way to the left.If anything is clogged,
it can be dislodged by turning the saddle valve all the way to the right and
back to the left.Once this is done,
turn the humidifier control dial above the click point and you should see water
coming out the drain line. If water is still not
coming out of the drain, check the orifice and in-line strainer to make sure
they are not clogged. The orifice is
located in the tube on the discharge side of the solenoid valve and the in-line
strainer is located on the inlet side of the solenoid valve. You may clear the orifice by inserting a
needle through the small opening.Clean
the strainer by running it under warm water to dislodge deposits or replace. After clearing and re-installing the orifice
and strainer (be sure to double wrench all water connections), turn the humidifier
control dial above the click point and you should see water coming out the
drain line.
if you mean your aprilaire humidifier isn't working then open the cover and remove the 4 screws on the fan motor mount inside and check for voltage at the transformer input 120 volts and output 25.5 volts a.c., then check the control board wherever you have it located on the furnace or upstairs and make sure yhe humidity level is set high enough to make the unit run(you will hear the water solenoid click on the furnace below the aprilaire unitwhere the water line is if its working correctly),then check the humidistat on the outside of the building as they can go bad
if it works in the test mode then it should be okay but you can get a humidity gauge from radio shack and set in the house to see how high or low its is. the humidifier is only going to give a max of 45% humidity
If you have 24 volts to the solenoid, then it's not the control card. It's either the solenoid or there's an orifice in the water line at the solenoid that sometimes stops up. To check the solenoid you need to disconnect the power to the system and disconnect the solenoid wires (the two brown wires) and ohm the solenoid. If you get a low ohm reading around 50 ohms or then the solenoid is good and you need to check the orifice. If the ohm meter doesn't move when you ohm across both leads then it's the solenoid and it needs replaced.
I corrected the problem...RH is rising nicely!! Installed by "professionals" on my Trane XV90....I redid their wiring and now have the following setup...
600A water supply coming from hot water line. Removed orifice inside incoming feed tube. control incoming water flow from saddlevalve on hot water supply ( make sure its a nice solid flow, no drips, but no "force" too it either)..enough to insure entire evaporator unit is wet and water is slightly flowing out of bottom to drain.
I also have it wired to run when ever the furnace blower is on. Heat or no heat. XV90 is variable speed, and by doing this the 600a is always adding moisture, until it reaches correct RH%
Also, I disconnected the outdoor temp sensor. I went to Radio Shack and bought a 47K ohm resistor ( 1/2 watt....4 pack for 99 cents). Installed that in place of outdoor sensor...now runs in manual mode. Have unit currently set to number 5.
The max the aprilaire can put out is 45% Rh. Your humidifier may wired up to run only when the heat is on. In some cases this is not enough time to maintain your humidity level your seeking. To correct this, the hum. has to hooked up the hot side of the water supply. And the humidifier has to be hooked up when the fan runs and leave the fan run constantly
I just solved a problem with mine today. One of my low voltage power wires to the humidity control had a bad connection. I reconnected it and I could again hear the solenoid valve clicking as I adjusted the dial control.
I found the problem with a voltmeter: there was voltage at the power terminals on the humidity control terminal board, but there was no voltage at the solenoid valve terminals. It was hard to push my big wires into the terminal board, but I finally secured the connection!
You should take out that aprilaire and throw it in the garbage or return it to who you got it from. Ask them why they didn't offer you the best humidifiers available. The only way to truly control humidity in your home without running your heat is a steam humidifier. Autoflo makes a good one also honeywell makes a new one. I have installed a honeywell tru steam in my own home and a few customers it hasn't lived up to its advertising. The auto flo has never given me any problems with customers.
There are 3 things to check on the humidifier.
Check the metal mesh screen, is it wet after the humidistat is call? If it is dry the water solenoid my not be opening or the nozzle is plugged. The circulating fan blows air through the wet screen to add humidity. Does the fan spin when the humidistat is calling? There is an intake and exhaust on the humidifier. Check that the metal was cut out properly when the humidifier was installed to allow air to feely circulate?
Thanks for the reply.
