Sony DVP-NS305 DVD Player "saying play" Questions

My 2 1/2 year old LG dvd/vcr recorder will play some dvds but will not play others. It says unknown disc. I was told to try a lens cleaner; I bought one and the lens cleaner says unknown disc as well.
