I have a 1986 Honda vt500 shadow my headlight only works in high beam. My tach light comes on when I turn the key to start but when I switch from low beam to high my tach light gose off. All the fuses are fine. Anyone have a solution?

test for power immediately at the light switch /dimmer switch and move on from there

Does the headlight itself work? Will it switch from low beam to high beam? If the lights work but just the indicator is bad, then perhaps the problem is in the indicator socket (corrosion or loose connection) or the wiring to the indicator (bad connector, break in the wire or printed circuit board trace). If the lights don't work, it could be the handlebar switch is failing but it's more likely to be the wiring coming from the bars to the handlebar pivot area.

bad electrical contact in the connector for the light, or bad light swich.

check the headlight switch, it maybe coroaded

HEADLIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty headlight switch or issue with its wiring. Or its faulty head light fuse.

do you have low or high beams?

LOW BEAMS: When headlight switch is turned on the headlight relay is energized providing voltage through fuse 37 and 38 to the headlights and the low beams come on.

HIGH BEAMS : same thing as above thru fuses 37 & 38. When the dimmer is in high, the dimmer relay provides ground to the high beams, and the high beams come on.

1. pull your flash see if lights come on?
2. check fuse 15 if good
3. check fuses 37 & 38.

There seems to be some short in the circuit of the high beam, you will have to follow the high beam wiring, best would be to get the color of the high beam wire frm the head light bulb socket and trace it along you will sure find somwhere the along it the short.
Check the light switch and the blinker switch too.
