Freelander TD4 diesel has a chain (mega bucks), L series diesel (pre BMW engine) has a belt (plus a small belt for the injection pump). the K series 1,8 petrol and KV6, 2.5L also have belt's.
it sounds to me like you have a faulty injector from the symptoms you suggest would get injectors tested
one thing you can try when car is running if you slacken injetor pipes one at a time .you should find the faulty one if thats your problem
From 53 reg onwards, diesel pump is under R.H. rear wheel arch, hidden by the plastic wheel arch liner. Older versions have combined fuel pump/sender in the tank (under R.H part of rear seat). You should be able to hear a faint purr from the pump when ignition is turned on but engine not yet running.
