I have had my 2006 GMC Envoy since 2006, has 228,000 miles on it, never has caught fire. There is a recall for driver's door window switch. They will fix for free at GMC.

I can only think you do not have the owner's manual for your vehicle. The information about turning the curb view assist mirror on and off can be found in the manual.
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader software (free) to download/save the manual. If you download and save the manual to your Documents folder, be sure to save it using a file name you can find again easily, something like: GMC Envoy 2006 Manual.
The instructions to turn the Curb View off is on page 3-64 (Image 208) of the manual.
Sorry to say but your mechanic is probally right because 204000 miles is alot of miles for a transmission and when the clutches start to slip thats what it sounds like.
