The 1999 Nissan Altima was designed with three different methods for opening the door locks. The ignition key will unlock all of the doors by inserting the key into the keyhole and twisting it clockwise. You can unlock the doors with the remote control supplied with the vehicle by pressing the left circular button with the symbol of the open padlock on it. Finally, you can unlock the doors from the inside by pressing forward on the armrest lock button, which has a symbol of a key on it. Nissan Consult 3 III Software Professional Diagnostic Tool
It's not the handles I've struggled with these issues on 3 altimas it's the door latch itself it's from moisture it's worse in the winter if I run the car for a couple hours with heat on the door opens also if you repeatedly lock and unlock the door with the power lock it will release eventually. I've been locked in my 04 Altima multiple times and had to lock the door sometimes to get it to hold shut these cars are nutorious for door issues
that is maybe because you have an auto lock in the car and so if you lock it manually while starting your car it basically unlocks. just leave it unlocked and then start the car and it will lock on its own. same for when you turn off the car get out and want to lock it just press the auto lock and dont lock it manually.

Yes, the security system shuts power to the starter and fuel pump. You can try disarming by unlocking and locking the doors the power door locks switch (depends on model). Place the key in the ignition and set to ON, ALL doors closed!! Cycle the locks using the power locks button on the driver's door "lock" then "unlock" if this doesnt work, try same method with the ignition OFF. Otherwise your security system is malf.
make sure the trunk is locked and the ignition is off.
the altima will not lock if the key is in the ignition.
it may think there is a key in the ignition because the switch is bad.
