I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 diesel. This truck just had an alternator installed along with a water pump. I was driving to work and the volt meter tanked. I pulled over, turned the engine off for minute, restarted again and for the rest of the trip no problem.
The next day I started the truck and it stalled, started again and stalled again, started again and ran fine for d=short trip to/from town. Next day, started and immediately stalled, started again and pushed accelerator ran for a moment, hiccuped twice and died. Noticed tach stayed at 1700 RPM even with engine dead. Tried to start again, Volts at 8, full fuel tank reading empty, no start. Lots of cranking nut no start.
Check if the power to the fuel pump gets constant power when switched on it may have a electrical problem you may need to get a auto elect tech to help you
i think you sould change the diesel fuel filter then check if the system dose not have any air locked in the fuel line and you can also check if the fuel pump is doing its job

Remove the belt (remembering how it goes back on, drawing the belt routing usually works) I find it best to remove the two top shroud nuts 13mm. Also removing the air box will allow for access under the alternator. Two 10mm bolts hold in the water pump. Clean the sealing surface.. install new water pump and gasket. Re-install components. Top up lost coolant making sure air is blead out, otherwise you will run into overheating issues.. Good luck
those year trucks have bad lift pumps on the diesel engine. it is located near the fuel filter. they are also known for starving the injecter pump for lubrication oil due to the pumps low capacity. it is now recomended that an in the tank pump change over kit be installed
it doesn't have a fuel pump relay it has a fuel pump control unit and it is located on the chassis back quarter drivers side near the tube cross member for chassis on top of chassis rail near bed mount. locate the rear springs front perch and it will be above that on top of rail.
hope this helps. good luck and please ask any question you have.
stop up fuel filter or fuel injection pump. pressure low.make sure air filter is not stopped up.diesel engine need to get air in order to run well .check the egr valve and pvc valve .make sure they are not stuck open.
5.9L DIESEL
The 5.9L diesel engine accessory drive system (with a/c) consists of :
Generator Pulley (1)
Water Pump Pulley (2)
Idler Pulley (3)
Power Steering Pump Pulley (4)
Radiator Fan Pulley (5)
Crankshaft Pulley (6)
Automatic Tensioner (7)
A/C Compressor Pump Pulley (8)
CAUTION: When installing the accessory drive belt, the belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. Refer to or for correct engine belt routing. The correct belt with correct length must be used.
1.
Position drive belt over all pulleys except water pump pulley.
2.
Attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to tensioner.

Hi. I had the same problem on my 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins. I went to
the dealer and they did a bunch of diagnostics and they replaced my
fuel pump. At the same time they put in a retrofit kit that moved the
fuel pump to the inside of the gas tank. I have not had the problem
since. The cost was about $1,200, but my 100,000 mile drivetrain
warranty covered it and I had to pay the $100 deductible.
