I have a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder V6. When cold the rpms jump up and down by themselves. Almost like your revving the engine. When you do hit the gas the rpms drop down so far the engine stalls out. Problem vanishes completely when engine is up to operating temperature. Has no trouble starting hot or cold, but is not drivable until warmed up. Problem seems to be getting worse over time. Had similar issues in the winter time when it was real cold out, but now it's doing it when its 80 degrees out. Took it to a local mechanic who said he's not familiar with old Nissans and doesn't have the software to diagnose the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Question... are the ACTUAL RPM's rising and falling.. (the actual engine itself?).. if the engine is NOT actually revving up and down... doesn't really matter... BUT, if the engine IS revving up and down.. you need to have a professional to look at it..this could cause damage if it decides to rev real high or/and then stop!!
I would check the switch on the transmission which controls that circuit. It is called the backup light switch, or the neutral safety switch if it is an automatic.
disconnect the negative cable from the battery, now disconnect the wires on the starter solenoid posts,, remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place ( bottom one first ),, pull starter off.
installing the starter is just the reverse of removal.
If your burning any kind of water then thats your probem.you put water with fire or electric what do you get. also if your smelling gas that can be the map sensor.it mesures the mixture and air.it also compensates the mixture when the motor is running like **** because of water in the cylinders or intake manifold. head gasked yes or intake gasket.
By air temp switch, do you mean the idle air control valve?
