Car cuts off when the air conditioning is turned on

I'm having a problem with my car and I'm hoping to find a solution. Everytime I turn the air conditioning on in my car the car just cuts off on me. It's been very hot lately and I would really love to get this fixed. Before I take it anywhere I would like to know if someone knows what this could mean and if it would be expensive to get repaired. Thanks!

Sorry for not being clear. It happens when I'm idle. If I'm driving and I cut it on it runs fine, but when I come to a stop the car will shut off. Or when I first get in the car to start driving and cut the air on the car will cut off and I'll have to crank it again.

Do the procedure below, do it exactly as discribed or it will not work.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

If I had to wager a guess, I would bet on the idle speed control motor

From the depths if H3LL (no year nor anycar stated>? )
here is your answer piggybacker
1: engine power so weak (due to misfire) it stalls engine. with AC on, ( I say not but is possible, i can demo it)
2: AC compressor seizing or near,
3: idle controls on engine borked. (clean the ISC valve)
4: scan it, you see errors, address them.win.

here is the ISC test , A/C off
1: hot engine, 180f is hot not 150f,
2: rpm is now at spec, (you look it up) 800 guess
3: the ISC job is to regulate idle speeds,
Idle speed controller, = ISC
the PCM does that, the ISC is a slave of the PCM
the PCM brain has the speeds stored in memory
and is in control at all times hot,its called a SERVO system. (engineering term)
4: now with RPM at spec, if not fix that first.
we put loads on the engine, each will cause the ISC
to open more and old idle to SPEC.
HL headlamps on
heater blower to HIGH those 2 alone are near 25amps load, rpm holds
if car is automatic, you never said nor did the hyghjackker.

shift to DRIVE
this is huge load
and RPM is regulated to spec, 800 or no changes
if all these test pass its a go,

the engine that misfires all the above is useless
fix MISFIRing engine first.

Air conditioning not turning off

This is due to the fact that the solenoid relay is stuck and so the ac is not cutting off. You need to open the hood and check after starting the car. If the fan is cut , does the ac cut off, if not the relay or the solenoid of the compressor must be checked.

On 2004 Trailblazer, when air conditioning is turned on car does not idle right almost cuts off. no problem at speed, only idle & slowing down.

I would suspect the clutch on the air conditioning unit, also if the unit is overcharged
from a recent charge this would also bog the engine. At speed it would not be as pronounced.
Hope this helps.

Air Con cuts in and out and so does cooling fan

Everytime I turn on the front defrost, the air condition goes on, how can I turn it off. Please note, the air condition button/light is already off on the front dash board.

This is normal....everything is working fine...if the window is being defrosted.

The defrost on a car works by using the A/C to remove the moisture from the air (thereby lowering the relative humidity)
It also lubricates the seal within the A/C unit during the winter...reducing the chance of seizure/failure during the following summer due to lack of lubrication.
