I have a Vanguard wall heater model VN18TB that will not stay lit and the electric igniter won't work

The ignitor is battery operated. Remove the button and replace the AAA battery wit the (+) going INTO the body (-) against the button.

The heater has a pilot with an Oxygen Depletion Sensing (ODS) safety shutoff system. The ODS/pilot is a required feature for vent-free room heaters. The ODS/pilot shuts off the heater if there is not enough fresh air. If the heater will not stay lit with plenty of fresh air available - this may be faulting. Likewise, a mispositioned thermocouple will not sense a flame and fail, too.

A link to the heater manual is below:

I PURCHASED A DESA RADIANT HEATER AT A GARAGE SALE, IT WORKS BUT IS IT VENTLESS AND IT IS A MODEL 0630545

I would really like to help you determine what you have. However, the model number you listed is not a DESA model number. I think you may have listed the Serial Number instead. DESA/Vanguard/Comfort Glow wall heater model numbers start with 2 to 3 letters then 4 to 5 numbers.

However, to visually tell if it's Vent-free (Vent-less) look for a round hole for a vent pipe connection and/or look at the manufacture's data plate on the side or rear of the heater. It will tell you whether it's Vented or Vent-free. If it doesn't have a 3' round hole for a vent pipe, it's Vent-free.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a vanguard vn1800e natural gas would like to convert it to propane is this possible

Sorry, but no vent-free gas heating appliances can be converted from one gas type to another. There are no conversion kits available for any vent-free gas heating appliances.

Wish I had better news for you.

Pilot light too big, how do we adjust pilot light on a Vanguard KV1800?

There is no adjustment for a Pilot Flame's Length on a Vent-free Gas Appliance. However, if you're using Natural Gas and it's a Natural Gas Heater, the normal length of the pilot flame is 2 to 2 1/2".
If it's a Propane Gas Heater and the pilot flame is as long as previously stated, you probably have a pressure problem from your tank. Contact your Propane provider to have them check the pressure on their tank regulator.

When the heater has the pilot lit we can not turn the thermostat to light the elements.

Try pushing the control knob down sightly and turning it counter clockwise to ON position. If it won't turn, this usually indicates that the control valve has locked up. Turn the pilot off and wait 5 minutes, Relight the pilot and try turning it again, as described above. If it still doesn't turn easily, the Control Valve will have to be replaced. It's not an inexpensive part, as it's the heart and brains of the heater.

Also, DESA International the manufacturer of your Vanguard heater is no longer in business. However, some parts are still available. Do a Google search for Vanguard Vent-free Heater Parts and you may have some success in find it for your specific model number.

It's rare for a control valve to lock up or fail. It's usually caused by someone trying to force the control knob to turn with a pair of pliers and usually in the wrong direction. Which breaks the plastic gears inside the control valve. I'm not saying you did this, it's just what usually causes it.
