Question about Minolta Vectis Weathermatic Dual 35mm Point and Shoot Camera

Open Question

Problem with Minolta Vectis weathermatic Zoom camera

I had recently loaded a new roll of film and had taken several pictures, with no indication of there being a problem. When I tried to take another picture, I got no response. When I looked at the small digital screen on top I saw the number "5" and a small image of the casing of the film used in camera (end view). My first thought was that somehow I had mistakenly taken a number of pictures but I'm not so sure.Thinking the problem might be the battery, I replaced it but this didn't make any difference. The screen still shows the casing image and the number 5. When the camera is turned off the symbols show constantly. When the camera is turned on, the film canister image blinks but the number 5 does not.

I tried to see if I could locate the user's manual on the web, hoping there might be info about whether the number 5 was a message indicating the nature of the problem. HOwever, I couldn't locate the manual.

Assistance, suggestions, advice would be appreciated.

wgokey1,
yes it should auto rewind. if it's new take it back to where you bought it. if not new, get an estimate cost before repaired.

Hi. A friend gave me a weathermatic dual 35 camera and said that it may need some work. I replaced the aaa batteries and turned it on, the lens moves, the red light comes on but it will not take a photo....

Your camera very likely has a lens error, this is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply become dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse then contact the manufacturer's service department in your country to find out about a free repair [EDIT: this option definitely will not apply to your camera as it's too old and Minolta no longer exist]. If the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed the cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose by trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. Although the article mentions Canon a few times, the advice applies equally to all cameras with lens errors and is not model-specific.

If the link doesn't work then cut and paste the following address into your browser:-

Good luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera, or at least are able to use the information to help decide whether to buy another camera. If you do decide that you have to throw your camera away then don't forget to remove the battery as it can be used in other devices. I have an old Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 100 AF camera and I am having trouble loading the film. Can you use Kodak Advantix APS film in this camera or should I be using manual loading film instead?

This camera uses 35mm film, not APS film. 35mm is a larger format, giving MUCH better results, at the expense of having to manually pull the leader across to the take-up spool each time you load a roll.

Camera does not rewind after end of film it spins, but does not engage the film. Joe M.

it is likely that this model of camera spins the entire roll onto the take-up spool, and then slowly rewinds one frame at a time until the last picture is taken. Then it has already almost rewound,

This shows up when you load the film. The cameras digital counter counts up to the number of pictures available, and counts downward each picture taken.

Sounds like a broken gear or linking arm. It will cost as much to fix as to replace. You now have a very nice Minolta paperweight, lol.
Those neat little film cameras are now a thing of the Ebay, LOL. Since many are dumping them for digital, they're quite available at good prices now.

If the battery is low in my Minolta freedom zoom camera, will the film be pulled back into the roll?

No. If the camera pulled the film back into the roll with a low battery, you wouldn't be able to take any pictures, rendering the film, useless. Don't worry about it, and if it REALLY bugs you, keep fresh batteries in it.

Make sure the flash is coming up all the way. If it gets stuck even slightly down from fully raised, it will do what you describe.

I agree, digital P&S won't work as well as your Olympus. Plus all your shots will have to be stored on a hard drive-

i think it means the film hasn't loaded properly. I had this and opened up the back and the film hadn't wound so it wasn't exposed. Anyway i just wound the film around a bit and shut the back and it turned on like normal. hope this helps.
