still won't shift
The word button , tips hand that it is a automatic trans,
but not which one. they had 2 that year, 42/44re and
the AW4 box, has a TCM (tranny brain.)
and all tranny brains go to limphome mode, (skipping or freezing 2nd) if inputs are WRONG.
the TCM can be scanned, to see why, skipping this step misses the boat,
I have the 1995 FSM book. chapter 21.
42 or 44RE trans? is that yours. the tag on side tells you what it is. look for the tag, and learn what car run for a drive-line.
page 21-45 is diagnosis page, in the FSM book.
ON car service, and step 2 is scan it. (step one is fuses. levels)
ever consider read this book on this car and this trans?
i use a Innova 3140 , tool that does jeep 1993-95, OBD1
i have not tried, to see if it will log a trans DTC;s
using a real scan tool , helps greatly to see all TCM codes.
most TCM can do 10 error code, all very revealing.
make sure the transmission is grounded, with a good ground strap
seen people replace trans 3 times, then do strap last. sad.
Trans issues are many
(ill skip bad trans)
wiring bad, from TCM to trans, or from TCM to all sensors. to it.
bad TCM
lost power 12vdc to TCM for any reasons.
lost ground to trans or TCM.
a scan tool that can scan this back in 1995 was the DRB-ii
DOES THAT HELP?
2000 WJ jeep , USA
when STALLS only driving , any time , or just as I come to stop it stalls. or stalls parked only. my guess parked only.
which engine is there?
3.1L
4.0L
4.7L ?
what transmission, what A/T trans, 42rle or ?
mileage comp. like mine, it's useless. forget that. but dead battery reset that, and is of no matter.
questions are plenty on all cases: (cars are complex!)
the engine stalls.? sure.
in to gear means , Drive and Reverse right?
when you do that the PCM adds more air via the ISC idle speed control valve. and just my do that. and is good sign.
besides stalling, does engine and trans work great , driving, like fast /slow, , hot/cold engine, , up hills too, fast?
is the CEL lamp in dash on key on and off running.?
did you check all fuses.
what is miles on engine.
when did it run perfect last, 1 week ago, 1year, 10 years?
ever get and engine tune up this decade? spark parts and filters?
is the ASD relay dropping out just before the stall>?
is engine rpm below 800 RPM before the stall? hot engine.
does engine reach and old full engine temp, 180F or more?
use a scan tool and see all DTC errors yet, dont skip this.
Forget the dash reminder gadgets or manufacture maintenance schedules You change trans fluid every 3 years If you want to change at 30,000 miles that's perfect, just don't go past 3 years & do power steering at same time
There is NO such thing as a maintenance free trans
I used to own a trans repair business
If you do not change trans fluid on any and all
automatic transmissions every 3 years and
NEVER more than 30,000 miles ,it is like
a death sentence for that trans. Three hot
summers of driving and kiss it good buy.
The oil over heats, and breaks down over time
Todays high tech vehicles run hot, and now have
5,6,7,speeds in them. Two people can not get them
to the work bench, as in the past.
So do you think Mike Rowe's Ford commercials really work?
The Companies that make vehicles do it for one reason. MONEY
They don't care if they last or their dealers techs can get there hands in
around anything, to even work on it. Try it some time
If your trans slips and is 8 or 9 years old, you already exceeded fords life expectancy
They tell you 100,000 miles. Try running a spark plug that long or trans oil,or power steering
fluid.
People are losing trans, steering racks and have all kinds of issues, for decades, because
of lack of common sense,or any knowledge of a vehicles needs. The MFG's love it
They even take your hard earned tax dollars and nothing changes
have you tried running a scan tool to check trans voltages and the valvebody of the trans operation? or even flush and conditioner of the transmission...hope this helps you...
first check all fuses body grounds because if the trany isnt getting a good ground would cause this problem and if those are all ok the reverse sylinoid failed wich is in the trans.
