When I engage the clutch, the engine dies. The baldes turn freely, so it looks like and electrical problem. Is there a safety device that would kill the engine when the clutch is engaged?

All modern riding mowers now days have several safety switches and or relays/micro switches. Some are simple blade switches that make or break contact depending on the position of a lever. There is a contactor under the seat that will kill the engine if you fall off(you have to sit on it for it for the engine to keep running). There is one that kills the engine if you put the mower in reverse with the blades engaged. And there is a contactor that senses wether the mower blades are in fact engaged or not. It may be awkward but you can look at all the mechanisms and find where the different contactors are and move the levers back and forth to see if they aren't dirty, bent, or a securement screw is loose or missing. It is also possible that one of the wires are broken or have come off of its connection point. Once you inspect them you should be able to determine the next course of action. These are not hard to fix although they can be difficult to get to. If it has a micro-switch at one of these locations you may need to test it with a continuity meter to determine if it is good or not.

The clutch will not engage on my chainsaw

electric saw or petrol driven
electric you have to pull the safety guard back to engage drive dogs
petrol driven is a centrifugal clutch that engages above idle and the safety bar is a brake on the clutch to stop it from turning
pushing the bar forward and then revving the engine will result in a burnt out clutch

What do I need to check to activate starter will not engage. Engine will start but dies when blades are engaged

If your mower runs fine, but dies when the blades are engaged, that has nothing at all to do with the starter - or with the engine. There is a malfunction is in either the electrical system, PTO clutch or one of the safety features somewhere. Check all of the belts first for wear or breakage, then if they're OK, you probably need a small engine mechanic, but it doesn't sound really serious.

Blades won't engage after got stuck in mud electronic pull on blade engagement

Blades would not turn after I got stuck in mud. Electric clutch.

  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Check for physical damage; anything look bent?
  • Is the deck belt intact?
  • Spin the pulley on the bottom of the clutch. Does it spin freely?
  • There could be mud or grit stuck in the clutch.
  • There is a drive key between the clutch and the shaft. Has this key been sheared?
  • When you pull the PTO switch does the clutch make a "click"? It's possible the clutch was burnt out during the mud incidence.
PTO Clutch will not engage or stay engaged.
There is a very fine discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:
http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
  • It does not give the air gap.
It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

Engine quits when ac turned on compressor unplugged

Knowing make model and year would help. Most newer vehicles, 2000 and newer, will adjust the idle control up to compensate for the compressor engaging. Possible there is an issue in the idle air control valve or electrical circuit.

I have a 26 horsepower husqvarna tractor and when I pull the switch to engage the clutch to motor dies as through the system is shorted. I have disengaged the pully system and the clutch is spinning...

I will offer a common solution although it may not be yours. If you think the engine is dying because of an "electrical" problem and not "bogging down" I would check the connection at the seat safety switch. This is an "operator presence" switch and if the mower "thinks" that no one is sitting on the seat, anytime the PTO or clutch is activated, the engine will cut off because it kills the ignition to the spark plug. It gets a little tricky because not only may the switch be malfunctioning but the connector that plugs into the button switch has it's own internal switch. So what this means is that if the connector has slipped and is not engaged all the way, the internal switch is not made or if the the internal switch is not working, is will kill the ignition to the spark plug as mentioned above. Hope this helps to some degree.

Mower will not drive

Usually, that's an indication the the seat switch is not working. It's like getting off the seat without locking down the parking brake or getting off the seat with the baldes engaged, same result...engine dies.
