Vizio VT420M LCD TV Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 15, 2011

My Vizio VT420M LCD TV has for several months has changed to a dark screen while viewing without any other problems. We always hit "power/cable" on the HD cable box and it would immediately come back without any problem. Until recently it would not budge from the dark screen, however we do have sound. I have tried the disconnect from all power for 24 hrs and had Vizio take me through a customer service directed reset by holding in the power button for 35-40 sec without any result. I have now removed the back pannel to reveal the main board and power board of which I have gone over with a magnifying glass looking for obvious bulging capacitors or otherwise. Everything looks perfect? I can purchase a main board from www.visparts.com for $169.64 (includes $20.00 core) but I want to have a better confidence that it is the problem. Do my symptoms ring any go to bells?

The TV does not flash a picture at all. It powers up with a dark blue screen with a light glow to it. So I assume that the back light is working. I can not view the menu or input settings at all.

I had the same problem 6 months ago. After tons and tons of research I replaced the main board and the problem was fixed. I should mention that some people say that the inverter boards are the problem but I tried that as well with no luck (they're significantly cheaper so why not?) Got the main board from shopjimmy.com. Unfortunately the board died again recently and I have sound but no video again. I'm wondering if there could be an underlying problem with the power board sending the wrong signals?

After reading above and under I still feel as dumb as before. We have exactly the same problem as louis823 but it helped too unplug the power supply overnight until now. Our TV was bought in Dec. 2009 so only 14 months old when the problem started in Feb.. We googled a class action regarding Vizio and found a lawyer that isplanning a class action case. Vizio has filed a clame against LG that made some of the parts, to my understanding. That makes me furious that they obviously know there is a huge problem with the TV's. Hard to tell how far this will go when they are blaming each other and we the consumer are the one that payed for this lemon. There is obviously a major defect with these VIZIO TV's. The least they could do is inform the consumer how to fix them or provide a kit. It cannot be legal & they need to recall them! We will not let this go.

Vizio 55 inch TV "Vizio E550I-B2" is Darker on the left viewing side, replaced the Power Supply board. And the Screen is still dark on the left side. Any suggestions?

It is a common problem for this TV, it uses a Sharp LED display panel. The problem is the data buffer IC inside the panel ether shorted, or burned open.

Vizio vt420m comes on then flickers and then doesn't show any picture, but the tv stays on

If you have not been using the TV for quite sometime, moisture would have developed some defects inside the TV when you switched on. Sometimes even insects and lizards might get in and cause short circuits. Anyhow this might require attention by a qualified service technician.

Vizio vt420m invalid format when trying to view netflix

The TV can't read the format that the data is in, it is a kind of code, your tv can decipher it.

Vizio lcd flatpanel tv with dark background

If half screen is affected it will be either a board (LCD and Plasma have different names) but in those one board drives each side of the screen unit--worst case is the display panel itself which is fatal from a cost point of view.

I have a Vizio VT420M. When I turn it on by remote, or power button, the Vizio light changes from amber to white, but I get no picture at all OR sound. Do these symptoms sound like a bad power supply,

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

I've owned a Vizio VT420M for just over 13 months. About a week ago the tv started flickering when I turn it on. The picture is visable, but the area around the actors is flickering. After about 7 to 10...

The flickering is most likely due to a faulty fluorescent backlight. Once the bulb heats up the flickering usually goes away. Some bulbs are easier to replace than others so I would contact your local TV repair shop.

My Vizio LCD TV screen fades to dark. Sound stays on.

I w having this same issue when watching a Blu-Ray disc. I found it to be dependent upon what picture mode the TV was set to. By this I mean certain picture modes would cause the TV to dim during dark scenes of a movie. Changing the picture mode helped a lot.
