'03 Lincoln Navigator has shut down 3 times in the last few months while driving for no reason. Have to wait about 7 minutes before it will start back up. Happened on the highway also.. How do i fix this issue?

  • johnlemont_t Apr 01, 2011

THANK YOU {user name} 'fordexpert', your advice helped me to resolve my Navigator shut down issues. I went on several sites for solutions but your feedback was the most helpful.

'fordexpert' explained on this site that with the Lincoln Navigator the traction assist works by throttling down the engine when it detects a difference in rotation from 1 wheel to the next, so if I could bypass the traction control I may be able to drive without the fear of my truck shutting down on the interstate.

After trying this solution I wanted to wait a few months to make sure the issue had been fully resolved before I recommended this solution to others.

What I did not realize is that my tires had been badly punctured so I believe the 'advancetrac' option noticed something wrong and was causing my truck to shut down while I was driving.

Obviously this is very dangerous I was on the interstate at high speeds two of the three times my truck shut down. Keeping the 'advtrac' option off until I could replace the tires and have my electronic system reset at the dealer allowed me to drive safely without my truck shutting down.

After I replaced the tires also the issue appears to be fully resolved. So if anyone is having similar issues like I had with my '03 Navigator shutting down while driving, I recommend:

    1) turn adv trac option off {bottom button on the Navi dashboard}
    2) have your electronic system reset at the dealer
    3) make sure your tires do not have any issues

Spray the Throttle Plate with CRC Throttle Body Cleaner

Not better--Test the TPS Sensor and replace, only if it
fails a test

Clean the MAF Sensor with CRC MAF Cleaner

You have an electronic throttle control motor,
if the throttle plate sticks ,it goes into ETC Failsafe and shuts off
or only goes 6MPH

You don't need a dealer ever.
Any shop with a scan tool can clear codes.
    You turned Advance Trac off.
What was the part about bypassing something?
You can not do that ???

Can the front suspension problem be due to the compressor

If the rear suspension is not affected its probably a leak or a front height sensor.

I think you should go for manual first after that it would be easy for you to solve your problem. I had visited this site past 2 months before for my vehicle and find it quite helpful may be you will also get something useful here

The vehicles makes a loud squelling sound when turning the wheel to the left. Doesn't make the sound when turning the wheel to the right only left. Also it seems like the transmission slips in the morning...

The converter seal in the trans is worn, as well as all the others
When you first start the vehicle and put it into gear,if you don't
wait a few minutes, there is little oil in the converter,it drains down
over night, thus 7-8 hours you mentioned.

Any slipping of a trans, is a reason to stop driving it, altogether

I once owned a trans repair shop ,and would suggest your trans
is about due for a rebuild.

Ten or eleven years may seen a short time to you,but not in the
transmission world. If you do not change your fluid every 3 years,
and not more than 30,000 mile,it is a death sentence.

I suspect, you have the same problem with the steering rack
No fluid changes, they last about 6 years, at best.
The squealing is the P/S Pump working against a bound steering
rack and possibly tight suspension parts as well
A new drive belt will help the noise some, but not a repair for the problem

Shuts of while i was backing up to my drive way

It sounds like your Navigator has a vacuum leak after the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. This could be in the intake air tube between the MAF Sensor and the throttle body or it could be a bad vacuum line, bad/stuck EGR valve, bad DPFE sensor, or intake manifold leak. There are several ways to search for a vacuum leak, but I'm not sure this is something you realy are looking to tackle versus having an idea if a shop is being honest with you.
